  • Spraymagic R7S Ascend 0.2: A pleasant surprise
There is a new player in town: the Spraymagic R7S Ascend 0.2. I was browsing Amazon over the last few days looking for Prime Day deals when this airbrush appeared out of nowhere. My first impression was that it clearly comes from the same family as the Gaahleri Mobius, and likely from the same manufacturing source. However, despite the visual similarities, this is not the same airbrush. The overall design is familiar, but the nozzle system is different. It is much closer to the newer Gaahleri Seeker design, configured here with a 0.2 mm setup intended for detail work. Overall machining appears to be good. The airbrush has a solid feel, the fit and finish are clean, and the ergonomics are well thought out. The trigger is also worth mentioning. Although the trigger mechanism itself is different, the trigger pad is an unmistakable copy of the Harder & Steenbeck Evolution. Functionally, it is comfortable and provides good control, but I do wish manufacturers would move away from this kind of obvious replication. There is nothing wrong with taking inspiration from successful designs, but simply copying another company's work this closely is something I would rather not see. I would much prefer to see original design solutions, even if they pursue the same ergonomic goals. The airbrush includes what appears to be a 2 ml cup, a 5 ml cup, and a small 1ml micro cup, which is a useful addition for detail painting. I absolutely love it. As mentioned earlier, the nozzle is not the same design used on the Gaahleri Mobius. It is still a floating compression fit nozzle, but the geometry has been revised, and that translates into noticeably different spray characteristics. From a performance standpoint, this airbrush exceeded my expectations. Atomization is definitely smooth and consistent, even around 10 to 12 PSI. The spray pattern is remarkably stable during continuous fine line work, and paint delivery is soft and predictable, giving the airbrush a level of control that is genuinely impressive for its price point. Paint initiation is very gentle. Rather than an abrupt onset of paint, the airbrush eases into the spray, making it very forgiving and easy to control. While some experienced users may prefer a more immediate response, I actually think this characteristic works in its favor, particularly for beginners. It makes it easier to avoid overshooting your intended paint output and contributes to the overall smooth, predictable spray behavior. If I were to suggest one design change, it would be a slightly steeper initial needle taper to make paint initiation a touch more immediate. As it stands, however, the needle and nozzle appear to be very well matched, resulting in excellent overall spray characteristics. I paid $89 for this airbrush, which places it slightly above the Gaahleri Mobius in price. The obvious question is whether the increase in cost translates into better performance. Based on this initial sample, I would say yes. The needle appears to be manufactured to a good standard, mates well with the nozzle, and is capable of producing extremely fine, continuous lines. More importantly, the airbrush maintains those lines with a high degree of consistency, making it easy to modulate paint output and repeat results. Based on this first sample, I would consider its spray characteristics to be a noticeable improvement over the Gaahleri Mobius. That said, this is still only a first impression. A single sample is not enough to evaluate manufacturing consistency. Over the next few weeks I intend to purchase at least two additional Spraymagic R7S Ascend 0.2 airbrushes to examine nozzle and needle machining consistency and determine whether this level of performance is representative of the product as a whole. If subsequent samples perform similarly, Spraymagic may have a very competitive option in the budget detail airbrush market. ... show more

  • Good Price for a Good Airbrush
I’m still getting a feel for this airbrush which seems to be a “Frankenstein” sort of tool. It has some H&S features plus a Richpen appearance on its’ makeup. Easy to clean and has that smooth trigger feel of a good new airbrush. (Also not a bad price) I’m gradually working it into my stable of Iwatas, Olympus, and Creos airbrushes. So far so good. It is a purty thang, has a nice smooth feel when I’m detailing, and (best part) seems very easy to clean. ... show more

  • I was honestly shocked by the quality....
For reference, my very first airbrush kit was a little compact SprayMagic setup that came with their cheap little airbrush, I learned a bit on that before replacing the compressor because it wasn't holding up to the work I wanted out of it, but one of my memories after transitioning to a better compressor and eventually a Harder & Steenbeck Ultra airbrush regarding Spray Magic was that their cheap little airbrushes actually performed pretty well. They were HORRRRRRIBLE to break down and clean, but I honestly felt like I learned more using that cheap little airbrush than I did with the H&S "Beginner" focused airbrush. So when I ordered this Airbrush, I was honestly expecting it to be "not great, not terrible." after learning to paint with their older cheapies that come with their compressor kits. I am honestly shocked by how good this thing works. I'll admit right now, I am still not 100% on using the air pressure adjustment on the front of the brush, and it's kind of annoying for seating it in my airbrush cleaning pot I use for "storing" the brush between layers or whatever else I'm doing, but beyond that.... The trigger on this thing feels really smooth, I feel like I can get a solid layer down at just the right amount of paint that I want out of it, the adjustment to block out the trigger pull is helpful incase you have a habit of over pulling for the work you're doing, and the nozzle.......I will FOREVER hate Harder & Steenbeck for shipping the Ultra with the nozzle they included. Look, I constantly see YouTube airbrush tutorials say that the nozzle type that comes with this Ascend 0.2 is not good for "beginners", but I absolutely love mixing in the pot and it's next to impossible to do on the H&S Ultra without spending another $30 for a nozzle like this one. I love this nozzle type because it feels like you have more control, it's easier to keep the tip clean, and you can mix paint in the pot. The only downside I have ever felt with this style of nozzle is that the needle tip is more exposed, but the first thing I learned when getting into airbrushes is "beware the needle, pamper and protect the needle". Oh man, did I mention how much stuff comes with this kit? You get TWO paint pots (the listing said three, I only had two in my kit) , you get a second backup .2mm needle, you get a moisture catch, a complete male AND female quick disconnect system, I mean, for the price point of this airbrush and how well it performs. I'm honestly blown away. I was not expecting this thing to be even remotely this good. After getting some time into it I'm currently working on painting my Alpharius model that's the centerpiece for my 3k point Alpha Legion army with THIS airbrush, over my Harder and Steenbeck Ultra that I spent $110 on and then an additional $60 in parts to make it do what I want it to do by putting Evolution parts in it. This is an incredible piece of kit for the price, easily recommend. I wish their compressors had been this amazing out of the box. ... show more

  • Worth the price

As mentioned earlier, the nozzle is not the same design used on the Gaahleri Mobius. It is still a floating compression fit nozzle, but the geometry has been revised, and that translates into noticeably different spray characteristics. From a performance standpoint, this airbrush has truly surpassed my expectations. The atomization is impressively smooth and consistent, even at a low pressure range of about 10 to 12 PSI. When engaging in continuous fine line work, the spray pattern remains remarkably stable, while the soft and predictable paint delivery offers a level of control that is genuinely impressive considering its price point. The initiation of paint is remarkably gentle. Instead of an abrupt and jarring start to the spray, this airbrush gradually eases into releasing paint, making it extremely forgiving and easy to manage. While seasoned users might lean towards a more immediate response for their work, I find that this characteristic actually benefits beginners, as it significantly reduces the chances of overshooting the intended paint application. This quality contributes to an overall smooth and predictable spray behavior. If I were to recommend a design alteration, it would be to introduce a slightly steeper initial taper on the needle, which would allow for a more immediate paint initiation. Nevertheless, the current configuration of the needle and nozzle appears to be very well-matched, resulting in excellent overall spray characteristics. In terms of pricing, this airbrush sits just above the Gaahleri Mobius, leading to the inevitable question: does the added cost equate to enhanced performance? Based on my initial use, I confidently assert that it does. The needle seems to be crafted to a high standard, fitting well with the nozzle, and shows the capacity to produce exceptionally fine, continuous lines. More importantly, the airbrush reliably maintains those fine lines, enabling precise modulation of paint output and consistency in results. From this first experience, I would deem its spray characteristics to be a significant improvement over the Gaahleri Mobius. That being said, it’s crucial to remember that this is merely a first impression. Evaluating the manufacturing consistency requires more than just one sample. In the coming weeks, I plan to acquire at least two additional Spraymagic R7S Ascend 0.2 airbrushes to investigate the consistency of the nozzle and needle machining, and to ascertain whether this level of performance is representative across the product line. If the subsequent samples perform similarly, Spraymagic may well have a competitive contender in the realm of budget detail airbrushes. ... show more

  • I love this thing!
I've been using Spraymagic stuff for a while, mostly because it's pretty quiet and affordable - but the actual airbursh that came with the compressor was lacking a little. It just kinda clogs up a lot and ends up being frustrating if you don't maintain it perfectly. This works perfectly as a really great upgrade for the default set; it's almost a necessary one if you want consistent operation. I've been using this one for a few weeks without any bad jams, but there are two main things to note : the bit that attaches between the hose and the airbrush is not interchangeable between this and the default brush; you can't just unscrew it and swap it out due to differing trigger mechanisms. It'll fit fine, but the trigger won't work. You have to pull off the whole hose and re-fit it into this new brush. The other thing is that the flow regulator is right under the paint cup, instead of on the rear of the brush, so this may not sit right in your purging cup. Easy to clean, easy to swap, and a really wide range of spray you can dial in. So far, it's absolutely worth the cost - and it also comes with lots of extra parts - most importantly, an extra needle in case you mess yours up. This is great! ... show more

  • A complete shocker
First time I've had to do this but I was genuinely so impressed with the build of this airbrush when it arrived last night that I started using it and stayed up for several hours painting. Genuinely I'm in awe of the quality of the package you receive for what the asking price is. I'm almost positive that these brushes are being made in the same tooling factory as Gaahleri due to some similarities in the housing and nozzle design. The tolerances on all the parts are very good and the needle is smooth and straight. I mostly use lacquers and the atomization I was able to achieve was very satisfactory. A controllable, fine mist that isn't sputtery or inconsistent. Just plug and play. I WILL say that I don't know if this would be a good first airbrush to a beginner. The cap used on this is meant for precision and the needle is somewhat exposed. If you just need a generalist airbrush then maybe look elsewhere but if you want extremely cheap access to a very fine detail brush that won't fall apart and doesn't feel like it's made of pig iron, absolutely get this. Don't wait. ... show more
