Description

In Advanced Game Design, pioneering game designer and instructor Michael Sellers situates game design practices in a strong theoretical framework of systems thinking, enabling designers to think more deeply and clearly about their work, so they can produce better, more engaging games for any device or platform. Sellers offers a deep unifying framework in which practical game design best practices and proven systems thinking theory reinforce each other, helping game designers understand what they are trying to accomplish and the best ways to achieve it. Drawing on 20+ years of experience designing games, launching game studios, and teaching game design, Sellers explains: What games are, and how systems thinking can help you think about them more clearly How to systematically promote engagement, interactivity, and fun What you can learn from MDA and other game design frameworks How to create gameplay and core loops How to design the entire player experience, and how to build game mechanics that work together to create that experience How to capture your game’s “big idea” and Unique Selling Proposition How to establish high-level and background design and translate it into detailed design How to build, playtest, and iterate early prototypes How to build your game design career in a field that keeps changing at breakneck speed Read more

  • Very good, but very dense and academic
Good things: It's a textbook that looks at the concepts behind game design. Bad things: It's a textbook. If you struggle with reading dense academic-style texts then you will not enjoy this book. It's a brilliant book, mind you. However, I just want to warn those coming in on this especially in the first chapter. I highly enjoyed the book though, but again have no problems reading dense technical texts on a regular basis. ... show more

I am going to read through it a second time, but just based on the first reading, I can say that this book is the most lucid and practical introduction yet to how the structure of games works, particularly games as systems. It strikes an excellent balance between description of the fundamental mechanisms of how games work and practical consequences of those fundamental mechanisms. If you are a game designer, this is a powerful and illuminating approach. It should not only be read by those who seek to learn about how to design games; it's also a pretty significant contribution to the slowly growing body of theory and scholarship on what is often loosely terms "game grammar." I would recommend it to practitioners and academics alike. ... show more

  • One of my favourites
It really opens up about thinking in systems not only for games but how to think in terms of systems for other areas of life as well.

  • wordy wordy wordy, but recommended
Good content. But can be extremely wordy and repetitive at times. Really a lot of common sense some times you feel like reading stuff most developers already know, at least unconsciously.

  • Must read
Must read book for game designers. It covers from very basic stuff to the most advanced topics. Its systemic approach is really new concept and very important to understand.

Pages were upside down. Text not centered on page correctly so text was cut off and unreadable
