  • Cool STEM project for my 8 year old
I really liked this project for my 8-year-old. I have assembled the Tank and the Pi-Car with my son, but I did most of the work on those. However, after he watched me assemble the other two projects he was able to take this project on by himself with my guidance. Need to ensure you follow instructions correctly since they are very comprehensive, which is good! Overall, I would buy more of these robots, but I ran out of spare Raspberry Pis. Need to partner up with RaspberryPi and sell them together as a bundle. There could be cost savings for everyone on that type of deal. Just a suggestion for Adeept. These STEM projects are fun and educational! ... show more

  • Great robotics kit if you're comfortable with operating a Raspberry pi and Linux
I got this for my 11yo son and myself, as we've had some prior experience working with a Raspberry Pi remote control car. Once you get it all working, it's definitely fun, but here are some notes on the experience: - First, it does not include either a Raspberry Pi or the 2 specialized batteries. That's fine; it says so above. - You actually don't need the batteries. We plugged in the microusb cable into the Pi, and that was enough to power everything. - The instructions aren't included. Instead, you need to go to adeept.com/learn and download the zip files for ADR026 - I am an experienced software developers, and I have familiarity with Linux and Raspberry pi. You will be installing some software on your Pi, primarily Python3. If you don't know how to use Linux, or your Raspberry pi isn't already running successfully, I would think twice. This is not a kit for true beginners - There are many tiny screws and bolts. You'll definitely want a helper to hold things - I had to substitute a few screws for alternatives. Specifically, the main screw holding the swivel servo I had to replace with a longer screw. - You don't have to do any computer programming. Running the existing scripts is enough. I would estimate it took my son and I two hours to assemble the robot. Luckily, my Raspberry Pi 3 was already running with Python3 and starting the robot from there was pretty easy. I'm still struggling to calibrate the main servo that rotates the arm, but the other 3 (the raising/lowering, and grab claw) all work well. From my picture, you can see that I haven't mounted my Pi + control board to the base. This is because I want to be able to take the Pi on/off for other things. I hope you found this review helpful! ... show more
