Great book and DVD to begin French Horn! My child's school holds an instrument rental night sponsored by a local music store where they also sell instrument accessories and books. They were selling these books for $20 and Horn mouthpieces for $60. I immediately confirmed the title and publisher of the book and went to my handy resource Amazon! I bought the book for less than half the price they were asking, and I got there mouthpiece for $10! Bingo!! I ordered the book on Thursday and received it on Monday. I believe my child had it for class before the other students had theirs from the music store delivery to the school. The book was beautiful. It's large in size and has a full-color, glossy cover. The images inside are also full-color and the print is large enough to see if your music stand is a ways from you. This book also comes with a DVD to enhance your learning experience! My son is super happy to be learning a second instrument (baritone saxophone was his first), and could easily continue to learn additional instruments with the help of these books. ... show more

  • Excellent method book for one-on-one music instruction
I am a trumpet lesson instructor, and this is my go-to book for beginner trumpet players. It is comparable to the other staples Essential Elements and Standard of Excellence, but this method book integrates solos into this curriculum, giving students opportunities do develop as soloists from an early age. I highly recommend this book for the music lesson setting because it lends itself to one-on-one instruction better than the other beginner band methods. The only slightly odd thing about Accent on Achievement is that the first note it introduces is an E rather than a C or G, but you can easily switch up the order of what pages you work on. The listening CD is also a helpful feature. ... show more

  • What we needed/best price
My son needed this is Band. It was a good price considering in stores you could easily pay a few dollars more. I suppose it may not be worth it is you're not a prime member (would probably be cheaper to buy it locally than to buy it here AND pay shipping) But it was worth it for us and saved a few bucks. ... show more

  • Very helpful for beginners, but you still need a teacher
I'm an experienced musician, and took a semester of French Horn in college 30 years ago. But I'd forgotten a lot, so I needed this book to help me relearn how to read music for the horn. I like playing along with the accompaniments. But anyone who has never played before will still need a teacher to show them how to hold the horn, how to drain the spit valve, how to play different pitches, etc. I don't like that I can't select tracks on the CD. Every time I insert the disk, I have to manually click up to the number of the exercise I want. But it's a great little book to get started with playing simple tunes. ... show more

  • This was the book I learned on back in middle ...
This was the book I learned on back in middle school. It's very clear instructions for anyone whether receiving professional lessons or just learning on their own at home. This is the reason why I bought it once I found it. I used it for 3 years and it works.
