  • Great book for preteens
My 10-year-old is starting to stay home alone with little sister for short time periods, and we got this book to help her feel more comfortable. She excitedly filled in the sections with questions for her, and has been excited instead of scared the few times she has stayed home alone now. This includes instructions and questions for things you might not think of, like, what are you allowed to eat? What do you do if there's a knock on the door? Knowing these answers helps kids, especially if your kid worries about everything! It also includes stories and comments from other girls that made my daughter feel less alone. Very good guide if you have a kid that reads well and worries about these things. ... show more

  • A Smart Girl's Guide: Staying Home Alone (Revised): A Girl's Guide to Feeling Safe and Having Fun
I bought this for my grand-daughter who is 11 years old, going into middle school and now transitioning to being home alone after school for a while. She's an avid reader and she loved the book and want's more from the author. She announced that she is now full of knowledge about staying home alone. The book gave her ideas on things to do alone, how to be safe, and what to do in an emergency, and she insist on making her own first aid kit now. She was giving her parents a bit of trouble not following the rules so hopefully, if she retains one thing from this book that will keep her safe and alive then it will be worth the $6 I paid. ... show more

  • Good!
Good, very helpful. Good strategies, good tips, overall very good and helpful book for older (11-12 yr old) kids. I recommend this.

  • Things to think about before staying home alone
My 10 year old grand daughter and I read this together in preparation to stay home alone in a year or two.It has helpful suggestions. The book is easy to read and colorful which kept her interest right through till the end. I would recommend this for anyone starting to have conversations about your child being responsible at home alone. She wanted to stay home alone and it was difficult to explain why we didn't think she was ready. After reading the book she began to see what that really entails. Helpful read! We're going to start doing quick runs to the grocery store while she stays alone for 30 minutes at a time for practice runs. ... show more

  • Excellent conversation starter!
I bought this for my 10 year old daughter. She isn't ready to stay home alone yet, but this book does a GREAT job of going through all the details for which she needs to be prepared (and of which I had forgotten from my own childhood!) This is a great book to get the conversation started and get rules established. It has your back as a parent, and it focuses on getting girls to think responsibly - thus aligning their need to be independent with your need for them to act maturely when home alone. ... show more

  • Great Book and Overall Series for Tween Girls
My daughter loves these books, and so do I. They have great information and include things for the whole family to think about, talk about and work through together. It also gives her a sense of ownership over herself and her situations and makes her feel in control. This has a ton of great tips and knowledge as your kids begin to spend time home alone. Some things we read, and I didn't even realize we hadn't discussed those things. Highly recommend these books. ... show more

  • An amazing book
I loved this book! I really liked that it teaches you what to do in emergencies, and when someone is at the door, and phone calls and so on. I also bought the babysitting book and it's great too. I think American girl writes very good and helpful books.

  • Too basic for my kids
Now that my kids are old enough to spend longer times here alone, I purchased this. They are 11--this might be written more for an 8 year old level or a nervous kid. It's very common sense in nature and everything they 'recommended' we'd already gone over or is just super Captain Obvious. My kids were most excited about the snack recipe section which has...wait for it...the originality slays....ants on a log. ... show more
