  • A career-point analysis for everyone on how to move to, and through, the workplace - from top CEOs
Format: Hardcover
Four Seasons are an easy and apt metaphor for a CEO’s journey… and basically if you have any job, I learned. If you haven’t read the authors' No.1 best-seller "CEO Excellence”, don't worry, this follow-on stands on its own remarkably well. It is shorter than its big sister, but uses the same combination of intimacy and perceptive analysis to explain personal leadership, regardless of industry, geography and market. No one has access to the world’s best leaders like the senior partners at McKinsey and they make the most of it, along with the remarkably rigorous but amazingly clear thinking everyone quietly goes to them for, as the undisputed premier strategic consulting firm. Unlike that first authoritative volume which covers the key qualities and habits of being a leader, this book unlocks two more areas that shockingly no one ever seem to spend time on: the early Spring period of what to do to give yourself a chance at the Big Chair and even more perceptively, the Winter period of how to recognize when it’s time to move on. Within the first ten pages it becomes obvious this is not another self-fulfilling, research laden piece of bookshelf decoration. It’s not even a business book if you look carefully. It’s a personal career book for anyone who wants a better job and the awareness of how to get it, keep it, do something good with it and know when and how to finally let it go. It works as much for the teenager at the counter trying to be the night manager of their local fried chicken restaurant, as for the head of the largest company in the world worrying how to retire with impact. That sounds like a commercial, but I found that if I just pretended I was a CEO, I could translate simple terms like “operating rhythms”, “teamwork”, “talent” etc. into my world and all of a sudden I could start applying lessons on my level. I skipped the (rare) mentions about pacing oneself for international travel and how to deal with boards - though I admit they were interesting to learn - and came up with self-reflection that was pretty revealing Time after time, the CEOs come off as regular people saying obvious things, which says a lot for the authors ability to get personal and get real. But if it’s really that obvious, why doesn’t everyone see these things and act as thoughtfully? That’s diamond-level advice and its mostly not about big complicated things; it's about what to look for, how to read a situation and even just a room full of people, who to take advice from, and when to dare to be different, as just a regular person, which is all these CEOs really are - regular people willing to make massive decisions because someone has to do it. The variety of people is impressive - and part of why it's easy to pay attention through every short chapter. Whether you’re the chicken guy or the most egotistical CEO, can you be humble enough in the private moments of reading this book's pages, to be accountable for you and your work situation? Because that awareness is the starting point to the challenges of every “season". And revisiting that awareness with fresh eyes as the seasons change around you is what will make you successful. This book gets you there, through personal phrases and stories that are so intimate, an everyday person can relate. And somehow they carry more weight when people who have made a difference on the biggest stages of the world, say “well, basically here is a big part of how I got through that thing” or “this is what you need to look for to know it’s time to make a change and do something new”. I’ve learned that like any self-help book, it depends on what you do with it. A CEO for All Season is a hard-working personal powder keg of motivation. After the first small-format 110 pages, we get 30 pages of “reflection exercises”, like a personal coach making sure you were listening and making it easy to get some insight, make big moves with confidence, measure your success, have the resources you need and deliver to the people watching you. So it’s two tight books in one. I was a fan of the first book and I’m an even bigger fan of this one. Read it on your Learjet or on the bus, it makes no difference. I think it really brings clarity to looking at how to move to, and through your job - and we all need that. ... show more

  • Good, practical read with lessons for leaders at all levels
Format: Kindle
A CEO for All Seasons takes lessons learned from the highest-performing CEOs and translates them into really practical tips for leaders at all stages of the journey - future CEOs, new CEOs, mid-tenure CEOs, and those getting ready to hand over the reins. My favorite part is all the stories the authors share, which makes it feel like you're getting to listen in on a fireside chat with leaders like Reed Hastings, Jamie Dimon and Marillyn Hewson. A great bonus is the reflection exercises in the appendix, which really help apply the concepts in practice. And my favorite fun/scary fact: in a survey sent to CEOs, their direct reports, and boards, "Regardless of tenure, [CEOs] score themselves higher than direct reports score them 100 percent of the time, and higher than boards score them 80 percent of the time." So beware of blind spots! I may be biased, but I think this book is a great way to get ahead of them. Worth the read! ... show more

  • The Reflection Questions And Worksheets Are Useful and Help Executives “Take Stock”.
Format: Hardcover
In brief, this book takes a life cycle approach to the work and the tenure of a CEO. It is not academic. Its intent is more pragmatic. The good news: it does not offer an overly simplistic road map like many business books do. Rather, it is a more reflective book. What I think of as a kind of thinking person’s guide to understanding this complex role and its core tasks. A role that varies greatly by industry and the scope of opportunities and constraints and the degrees of investment freedom CEOs face. It is based on lots of CEO interviews and these McKinsey partners own experience as advisors to CEOs. It is a short book, 5 chapters (112 pages). No thick description case studies found here. Rather, short vignettes and examples that give us useful glimpses of this complex terrain. Importantly, the book includes a 25 page appendix of work sheets and reflection questions (many are useful, some too abstract, some too complicated). All in all, a book that goes wide in a good way but not deep enough. Yes, a useful guide helping executives “take stock”. Also, a practical resource for use in both executive coaching and in executive education. ... show more

  • A study in the lifecycle of leadership
Format: Hardcover
Leadership as a CEO is among the most demanding roles in a business environment. Everyone hangs on your every word, for better or for worse, and people are reticent to criticize the leading leader, even when the leader needs desperately to hear critical feedback. The promises of making an impact are great, but so are the opportunities to make a mistake. The authors, senior partners at the McKinsey & Company business research firm, seek to demystify the CEO's leadership lifestyle through qualitative surveys of leading CEOs in American industry. Although I like the topic, I don't like this book's title. Placing an emphasis on the word "CEO" tends to cut out other organizational leaders and other industries that might not run on a traditional business model. I work in academic medicine, and the organization chart is much different in practice than traditional companies. However, the challenges of leaders, often in decentralized groups, remains the same. The word "CEO" seems to attract ambitious people attracted to elite positions instead of natural leaders at any rung. With that weakness stated, this book does offer good coaching on how to flourish in a high leadership position. Starting with necessary preparation, it offers actionable advice to prepare for a career leap. It also coaches leaders through the important - and often neglected - art of passing the baton to the next generation of leaders, whose leadership skills a senior leader should be cultivating for years in advance. Of course, leadership is ultimately more of an art than a science, but trends exist that can enhance any leaders' effectiveness. Studying other leaders successful traits, such as this book offers readers, can help immensely. These authors offer aspiring leaders, especially at earlier stages, an opportunity to grow. I like their data-driven approach that relies on quotes from other senior leaders instead of just offering a one-size-fits-all approach. Leadership requires wisdom and skill, and books like this offer leaders the chance to enhance those immensely. ... show more

  • A true playbook for game-changing behaviors
Format: Hardcover
What I love about the book is how easy a read it is, given it takes us through the entire "lifecycle" of a CEO--from preparing for the role (stepping up) to leading with impact (starting strong) to sustaining momentum (staying ahead) to fortifying a lasting legacy (sending it forward). Having worked with the authors over several years in my role as their Publisher, their ability to connect very well thought-through strategies to powerful real world examples and storytelling is something I have come to deeply admire and also enjoy in what and how they write. Having been a CEO (of a media company) in a previous life, it is also very relatable and is likely to help all those aspiring to be CEOs gain much needed and practical life-lessons to be a better leader. ... show more

  • An insightful read
Format: Kindle
This book offers a lot of great takeaways for CEOs, aspiring CEOs, and anyone else looking to move forward in their careers. I was particularly impressed with the number and stature of CEOs who shared stories, tips, and advice — including everyone from Jamie Dimon and James Gorman to Anne Mulcahy and Dennis Muilenburg. These stories provided an important element of connection and grounding in the real world. ... show more

  • Insightful and relatable for anyone on a leadership path
Format: Hardcover
I am not a CEO, but A CEO for All Seasons still resonated deeply. The book captures the natural rhythm of a leadership journey—how it evolves through seasons of learning, growth, challenge, and renewal. The stories from well-known leaders are thoughtful and surprisingly personal, offering lessons that feel relevant no matter your role or industry. What I appreciated most is how the authors show that leadership is not about title or status; it is about purpose, adaptability, and helping others succeed. It is the kind of book you read once for inspiration and return to when your own season starts to change. ... show more
