  • Professional optometry instruiment
The FocusVue 9.5" Eye Occluder Eye Exam Tool is well made without being excessively heavy. There are no rough edges anywhere along its periphery, so it is comfortable to hold and not irritate your skin if held closer to your eye. The disc end is slightly cupped in shape so it is less likely to come in contact with your eye or eyelashes when it is being used. It is opaque, so you do not have any light passing through and so there is no distracting glow. The handle has a small hole at the end so you can hang this instrument on a hook when not in use. I have problems with my eyesight, and I like to keep tabs on it. I have a Snellen Eye Chart hanging at the end of a long hallway in my house, and I check my vision now on a weekly basis. Yes, holding your hand or a piece of paper in front of the eye you want to cover will work when doing this, but this is much more convenient. This Eye Occluder seems to do a much better job than anything else. Maybe it is psychological because this is exactly like what is used in my eye doctor’s office. When not in use, it hangs on a hook with my eye chart. The price is fair for what I deem a quality instrument. ... show more

  • Lightweight, easy to is, if placed high in the proper position no light comes in Lightweight, easy to is, if placed high in the proper position no light comes in
This FOCUSVUE 9.5" Eye Occluder Eye Exam Tool Vision is a hand tool to cover your eye when reading an eye chart. It is handheld and measures 9.5 inches. The eye cover area measures 2.25 inches and does a good job at covering the entire eye. It is made out of ABS plastic and weighs 4 ounces. I was diagnosed with ocular melanoma 2 1/2 years ago, which is a rare eye cancer. I had radiation which killed the tumour and the radiation has caused a decent amount of lost vision in my right eye. I see 2 eye Drs for treatment, an oncologist and a retina specialist and part of my exams are reading an eye chart. I got this to test myself. It probably is not a good idea as it is a reminder that I have minimal vision in one eye, but thankfully my left eye now has better vision than before my diagnosis. This tool is lightweight, easy to use and does the job. If I place it high enough on my eye, like I did in my picture, it covers my eye completely and no light comes in. ... show more

  • Amblyopia training
There is a condition called amblyopia that can happen if vision in one eye is worse than the other and you don't use corrective lenses early enough. What happens is the brain starts to ignore the fuzzy image from the bad eye and only uses the input from the good eye...making matters worse because it can be a negative feedback loop. There is a theory that our brains are flexible enough that you may be able to slow this down or reverse it if you start to rely on the input of the bad eye by covering the good eye and making the brain "relearn" how to see through the other eye again (ideally with corrective lenses so the vision is clear). This is my hope for this item over the longer term...but maybe I will get an eye patch when I work up to needing to do longer amounts of time like this. This is just a starting point to see if progress can be made. I think the item itself is great, but I don't know that it is a good value at the current selling point...I guess anything "medical" is marked up though. ... show more

  • A useful tool for eye exams
This is a very useful tool for those who want to do part of an eye exam, whether as a student in the health professions or those who just want to test things out. For this product, its quality is actually quite solid, feeling with some good weight. It works well to occlude one eye when testing out eye movements and vision. There is nothing much to complain about this as it does its job well. A useful tool to have in a kit. ... show more

  • Good quality and useful item Good quality and useful item
This occluder feels well-made, and is sturdy enough for frequent use. It was delivered with several heavier items I ordered, and was not damaged at all. It is small enough to store easily when not needed. I keep mine in a drawer in the kitchen when not needed. I have a medical condition that causes double vision when my eye muscles get tired. My distance vision is controlled with medication, but reading is difficult. I use this occluder to cover one eye so I can focus the other eye on small print, such as cooking directions or medication bottles. I also have to use reading glasses, and this is device is small enough to slide underneath the lenses so I don't have to try to focus both eyes together. Prior to getting this I would close one eye, but that strains my eye muscles and makes it harder to focus afterwards. This item is very helpful for me here at home, but I think it is good enough quality to be useful in a professional setting as well. ... show more

  • Great tool for optometric practices
Very durable occluder for any optometry practice. Easy to clean with alcohol. I like that it is black so that patients cant see through it and you dont notice if it starts to get dirty or if there is makeup on it from the patient using it. It is comfortable to hold in your hand and use. It is also the perfect size. ... show more

  • Great value and easy to use for at home eye testing Great value and easy to use for at home eye testing
My Mom recently had cataract surgery and the visual recovery hasn't been as fast as expected. She has to use drops daily and has been given an at home eye chart to test her vision daily to chart improvements. This is very handy to use instead of just covering one eye with your hand. It is like the ones at the eye doctor office used to cover one eye while concentrating vision acuity with the other eye. This is a good value and easy to use. ... show more
