  • Perfect Audio Capture Solution for Indie Content Creators
Style: with charging case
As a content creator, I’ve produced, written and directed both music and short films, and I’m in the process of building a YouTube channel and an audience. I’ve already got cameras, a light kit, and a small, on-camera mounted shotgun microphone. Even though I have several other dynamic and studio condenser microphones, none of them are suitable for video production. The audio pre-amp on my camera is not good enough for professional audio. Recording dialog with the shotgun mic direct to the camera suffered from weak signal strength and in-body camera noise. This is quite common amongst many DSLR type cameras from what I’ve read and been told by other filmmakers. Having high quality audio is at least half of the equation for achieving professional content, so I knew I needed to add a Lavalier type of mic system to my kit. My research had found the Rode Wireless Go and the Tascam DR-10 systems. Since I’m just getting started, I had a hard time justifying spending $400US for two channels.
(And Sennheiser’s kit was waay out of my price range.) Then I came across the iRay Pro DW20 Pro RX by a company called 7RYMS here on Amazon. I really liked the feature set - it’s closest to the Rode in that it uses a transmitter/receiver type system (vs. the internal recorder of the Tascam lavs). And the price for two transmitters, the lav mics and a receiver set came in under $200. So I jumped on the iRay Pro DW20. It arrived in an elegant package; unboxing was like opening an iPhone box. Inside, you find a compact charging storage case containing two transmitters and a receiver. USB-C connections make it easy to plug in for charging. Four little blue lights on the front of the case let you know when the units are fully charged. I love how the transmitters and receivers lock into the charging box with magnetic connections. Very secure for transporting. And the kit also included two pro-quality Lavaliers. There’s so many thoughtful details to the kit. I really like having control over the individual gain settings on both of the transmitters, which you can control from the receiver using up-down volume controls. Brilliant. The receiver has a clip which slots right into the hot or cold shoe on top of your camera, no cage or adapter necessary. Ultimately, it comes down to sound quality, right? Just connecting the output cable of the DW20 PRO receiver to the mic input on a common DSLR like my Canon Rebel T5i series gives you seriously good quality audio that can then be post-processed. I used the dead-simple, built-in audio enhancer in Final Cut Pro X. With one click you have punchy, crystal-clear sound. Score! There’s lots of connections. You can monitor recording with a separate headphone jack output on the receiver. It’s easy to record to mobile iOS device with the use of a USB-C to lightning connector (not included but easy to find). Open up an app like Filmic Pro or 4 Track, arm to record and it’s seamless. Accessories include two dead cats (windscreens) for using the transmitters without the lavs, as well as connector cables. The only thing I’d recommend is a small case for the cables, mics and windscreens. I use an old microphone softcase to keep track of the accessories. In summary, this package has everything you need to capture quality audio at a very affordable price point. It’s a perfect solution for indie content creators like Vloggers and YouTubers. The engineers at 7RYMS really got it right and I look forward to seeing what they come up with next. ... show more

  • Great Value in a Well-Rounded Package
Style: with internal recording
I am a full-time professional photographer/videographer and I have owned many wireless lavalier systems over the past 15 years. The systems I currently own work well and I've been reasonably happy with their performance but occasionally transmission dropouts occur and that becomes a nightmare when it happens at something like a wedding where there are no second chances. I also own lavalier recorder units which I started using for weddings to avoid the potential audio drop outs, but then I had to take the time to sync the audio to the video during editing, and that's an extra tedious step I was tired of. I saw an advertisement about the 7RYMS iRAY DW30 and was excited to see that this system was both wireless and had the reassuring backup of internal recording. So if the wireless signal does have a glitch, and audio into the camera has a problem, I do still have the backup of the internal recording. There are other systems that offer this, but most are more costly and often have other limitations in their functionality or features that prevented me from using them. I'd heard good reviews about 7RYMS before, so I decided to give the DW30 a try...and have not been disappointed. The wireless system has very good sound quality, plenty of transmission range, and is probably the best option at it's price-point (and compared to others costing a lot more). It's a great package with the two transmitters and one receiver being stored inside a rechargeable case which allows you to recharge the system a couple of times. The included accessories are nice and the connection cables for cameras and cell phones are much higher quality than I expected. Another feature that helps set this system apart from the competition is that both transmitters have bright (easy to read) LCD screens. Most systems only have an LCD screen on the receiver which greatly limits the ease and functionality of using the system. So having screens on all three units, great quality sound, nice accessories, the charging case, and the fantastic on-board recording feature, it's an excellent value and option. Whether you are an aspiring content creator, or a full-time professional videographer/filmmaker, the DW30 is a fantastic addition to anyone's gear bag. ... show more

  • Easy to Use. Quick to Set Up!
Style: without charging case
While this microphone set is marketed towards cameras and speaking (which it works very well for), I was in need of a very portable instrument microphone for brass instruments. Seeing that these packs were small, lightweight, and had an extended battery life, I purchased them to try for our musical program and was very pleased with the results! The two transmitters came with good quality lavalier microphones, and cables to connect them to cameras. The receiver is the same size as the transmitters, and all devices are clearly marked as either TX or RX so it's easy to know which it which. To top it off, they came with a USB-A to 3-way USB-C charging cable! Getting everything setup took a matter of minutes -- everything is pre-configured and ready to go out of the box. PROS * Small, portable, light. * Great battery life. * The quality of sound is great for both voice and musical instruments for performances. * Quick to set up, and easy to understand. * Can also be connected to your computer or phone through the USB-C port on the receiver! CONS * As with most wireless microphone systems, make sure you have as clear of a line of sight as possible. This product performed on par with other wireless microphone systems I've used in the past -- no regrets! * The product expects you to plug the receiver into a 3.5mm jack. My use required an XLR cable, but it was easy and cheap to pick up a 3.5mm to XLR adapter. Not really a con, but know what your inputs and outputs are. In summary, if you're looking for a portable wireless microphone system with long battery life and good sound quality, this is a great option. ... show more
