My one issue with these shovels is that the stickers on them glued themselves to the metal surface and do not want to peel off fully, leaving much of the backing and adhesive behind. I find this quite annoying, but it doesn't affect the functionality of the shovels, so I'll get around to fully taking the paper and glue off at some point. These shovels are mid-range in duty, and I would not want to use these on my Texas Gumbo soil when it's hardened and dry. The ends of the shovels are somewhat dull, but they do get a good bite into the dirt when it's damp from rains or hose water. The handles are easy and comfortable for my small hands to hold. The shafts are well coated, solid and strong, without cracks or damages. The metal shovel heads aren't the strongest alloy, but they're fine for small loads and looser soils. I really like the small shovel for digging a hole to plant seedlings in, it's just the right size for the holes. These are great quality shovels. I like that you get 4 in a box with different size and shape options. It comes packaged super well, it 2 different boxes. The handles are nice wood, and have a great grip. I can’t wait to use them soon for my garden! Overall a good value for the quality and quantity!

    • A Good, Medium-Duty Set of Shovels

Starting at the top of these shovels, I’m a fan of the plastic D grips. They give you better control and keep the handle from twisting in your hand when you pick up an unbalanced load. The wooden handles are great; they have a nice solid feel. The steel blades are what I would consider medium-duty. When I used the garden spade to take up some grass sod, I could feel it bend slightly as I pushed it through the top layer of the grass. In all fairness, the blade of the garden spade is nearly flat, so it does not gain additional stiffness from curvature, like all the other shovels in the set. I sharpened the edge of the garden spade’s blade, which helped getting it through the sod, but a slightly stiffer blade would be preferable. I also used the transfer shovel to move some gravel, and it worked fine. I’m not sure I’ll ever find a use for the short, utility digging shovel. I have a small, folding shovel for camping and I can’t imagine gardening on my knees, which were a couple of uses suggested by the manufacturer. But time will tell. ... show more

The metal is a nice quality although I wouldn't consider these shovels heavy-duty. The handles are a solid wood with a good finish; smooth and well-made. I love the D-handles on the shovels and find this set has a nice assortment of good quality shovels at a very reasonable price.
