These worked great in my hammer drill and the bit fit my drill easily with the adapters that were included. These might not work great on harder or larger logs if you use a standard cordless drill or less powerful drills. But if you follow the recommendations these bits can save you a great deal of time and effort over chopping the wood with an ax. Also this might be more convenient at times than using a chainsaw or other gas powered tool. In my case I was able to use the drill with these bits during a burn ban when gas powered tools are not allowed. For the price these are a great value since they can really save you a lot of time over chopping and is more efficient than using a chainsaw.

I got this to try out, as I have a LOT of wood that I'd like to split and be able to use in a fire pit. It's easy enough to put together, and works well enough if you have a drill large enough to run it. I used a Bosch Bulldog so there was enough power for it, as well as a side handle that would let me keep control of the drill. I did try it with a DeWalt 20v drill and the drill had enough power to turn it, but not enough physical size for me to easily control; so I stuck with the Bosch. The thing that I found was that if the wood is hard enough, or if its soft, small enough, AND you can keep it still this works fine. I was splitting a combination of Elm and Cottonwood, and what I had happen was if the cottonwood was big enough all this did was bore down into the wood. If it was a relatively small piece then it would split. The Elm didn't have this issue, of course I didn't have pieces of Elm that were as big as the Cottonwood. The larger logs I was able to hold with my feet/legs, but the smaller ones I wound up using a cargo strap to hold them still; the Bosch drill is fairly long with this item on the end of it and while I could probably have just braced the wood with my feet, I was able to secure several of the smaller pieces of wood together around a big piece of cottonwood to keep everything still while I ran the splitter. I suspect that performance in large pieces of pine might be similar to what I saw with the larger pieces of cottonwood where it just bored a hole. Still, it's a handy item to have and made splitting a lot of my wood easier than swinging a splitting maul all day, and the last wedge I bought cost close to what this item's price point is so I consider it a good value, within the limits I mentioned.

As one who heats with wood, I usually spend my Saturday mornings with a cup of coffee and my kindling splitter in the basement. The kindling splitter works extremely well with the right wood, but I saw these and wondered if they might make my kindling splitting a bit easier. The bit set feels as solid as can be, and they are pretty beefy in size. You really need a decent 1" or larger SDS type rotary hammer; a 1/2" hammer drill isn't going to cut the mustard. On straight grained wood, like ash, this thing works marvelously, but so does a hatchet or kindling splitter. On fibrous wood, this thing will rip your wrist if you're not careful. As the splits became smaller, I found it more difficult to hold the log; wrestling to secure the wood really doesn't speed the process up. While this thing may be useful for others, I'll stick with using my kindling splitter in the basement.
