  • Good alternative, screws preinstalled, provides good ¼” gap
The inset piece is ¾” (19mm) long x ¾” (19mm) wide and about 1/8” (3mm) thick. This worked fine for my non-brand name composite board. Once installed it leaves about ¼” gap between the boards. That is a proper gap as it allows water and dirt to flow through; any closer and the gap can get filled up. They were easy to install with the pre-inserted screws. The screws use a Torx T-15 bit. If you aren’t aggressive with inserting them, the bit should last for the box, since Torx bits don’t slip as much as Phillips, but you may want to have a second on hand just in case. This is the same style of fastener that was used a deck built recently. Several years ago I had another deck built and that was done with side fasteners. The gap was too tight, when power washing the deck I dealt with clogged gaps and ‘standing water’. These fasteners are working good for the platform steps I build in my yard. They are easy to work with, do not deform if I overdrive a bit. However you do need to careful not to send the screw through the fastener. I finally found the right setting for clutch to stop before they are driven in too far. ... show more

  • Good value and superior to deck screw systems
The media could not be loaded. Using Hidden Fasteners with composite decking creates a better-looking deck with a nice clean look, showing no screws. At only $0.10 per piece (currently $59.99/600) they are a fraction of the cost of name brand fasteners procured locally. They are also more than half the cost of using composite deck screws bought locally. Therefore, I think these are an excellent buy. Overall, these are well made and are not brittle. Pounding and bending them, they did not fracture. However, since these seem slightly more pliable than name brands, when screwing them down, if your drill is not set to a low torque, the screw can go through the fastener if you are not careful. These only needs to be snug so, do not over tighten them. There are some minor differences which should not be a problem for medium size decks or if only using these. These fasteners are 0.01-inches thinner, and give a spacing of 0.24 (vs 0.25 for name brand) so, for large projects, it might affect planning a little since a 0.01-inch spacing difference will add up over longer distances. Admittedly, that is only ONE inch every 100 boards. The only other difference is that when compared to a Trex, these do not have a straight, continuous ear/attachment and instead have two "ears" to hold the board. this gives less holding surface which might put a bit more strain on the of the board's kerf but, unless there are vertical stresses should not really affect the decking Only ONE T15 Torx/Star bit is included. I highly recommend you have additional T15 Torx bits available. With 600 fasteners, this should be enough to do approximately 250-275 sf of deck with a 12-in joist spacing. (I use the number of joists X number boards and subtract at least 10%+ for waste and for butt joints) Even though these are SLIGHTLY less robust/strong as a name brand fastener, they should be every bit as effective as the overpriced, locally procured name brands. They will do the job at a reasonable price. ... show more

  • 1/4" gap, slightly smaller screws, works well with our name brand composite boards.
A tiny bit smaller than name brand, and the screw is visibly quite a bit smaller. My husband who is installing the new deck says this will not make a difference in the long run. The plastic seems hard, dense and not brittle. The screws are pre-installed, torx. Bit in the box. Like others have said, use a low setting on your drill, and be sure to have another couple torx bits ready. Me: I couldn't figure out how these worked. They come in a bag, inside a box - no instruction. Husband: took a couple out, fitted them to a brand name, big box composite board and said "Yeah, these will work just fine." lol. Also noted that a magnet does NOT stick to the screw at all. So far, all the fasteners are usable, no issues. The 1/4" gap looks excellent. Good product. ... show more

  • Individual, not on strips. Screws ARE preinstalled. See below for dimensions.
We bought decking from the local big box hardware store that starts with close and bought the very similar fasteners from them that were for the composite decking. They were far more expensive. I cannot tell any difference looking or feeling the materials between the nylon part of these and the brand name ones, however, the screws that came in the brand name ones did seem to strip very slightly less often (could be that they gave more drill bits and these only come with one) but not significantly. In the past we used metal clips, and of course there is less worry about them breaking. I would say that if you are a DIY person, and can manage replacing nylon clips should one break I would not hesitate to buy these. The distance from the bottom of the clip to the underside of the “shelf” is 0.9 cm (just shy of a cm) and the distance from the bottom to the top of the clip is 1.2 cm. Across the bottom is 3.1 cm wide and the width of the wings is 1.9 cm. Nominally close to the brand name ones. Each one is alone, not on a strip (I ended up breaking the other ones apart, so I do not think this matters). They come in a bag in a box. The screws ARE preinstalled. They worked with the boards Timber Tech prime that we bought from the big box store with the blue logo. Photo with quarter for scale. ... show more

  • Good fastener
Overall this is a pretty good substitute for the Trex fasteners. The biggest difference I see when comparing the two is that these screws are slightly smaller but I doubt it's enough to make any kind of difference. The plastic seems to be plenty strong and of similar/same composition. Considering the vast difference in price, I would say these are definitely the better value. The bit is included as promised. In the photos, the Trex is on the left, these on the right. ... show more
