  • Great starter set
Style: Standard Set, 60-Piece
This is the best hobbyist grade set I've found on Amazon. It compares directly to very similar sets costing twice as much and delivers performance of much more expensive sets for non-pro use. Yes, "non-pro" is difficult to define. But if you only need the occasional thread chased or hole tapped, this set is all you need. (On the other hand, if you need to do actual, regular machining tasks and you're looking to save some money -- you REALLY need to save up and buy pro tools. You won't get there wasting your money a bit at a time on hobby-grade.) The machining on the taps and dies is clean and crisp. I inspected each piece and didn't find any crunchy bits worth noting. The handles are just ok -- I've broken tap handles of this type before. The T-handle is an exception as it is quite solidly constructed. The handles are easily addressed by buying higher quality stand-alone handles for this set. I noted several negative reviews based on the case and, yes, it is basic quality. But the seller is apparently listening because they have more/less exactly followed one reviewer's recommendation to add a piece of layered foam to hold the taps in place when the lid is closed. It works well and, although the taps all lay loose in their 'slots' (it's really a tray as there is no retention at all), none move when the lid is closed. (FWIW: I recommend hot gluing the provided foam insert to the lid so its not floating around when open.) I do wish the slots gripped the bits as they are subject to jumping out if the case is tilted/knocked while the lid is open. But look, these are minor nits on what is otherwise a surprisingly well machined set -- and a great value at this price. If you're not a pro, my advice is buy this set, replace the handles when ready and replace any heavily used taps or dies with high quality when you wear one out. In this way you minimize investment on a set full of pieces you're unlikely to ever use and you can focus additional money on quality exactly where you need it. Recommended. (Just be careful not to drop that case!) ... show more

  • Nice product. Poor case for keeping parts secure.
Style: Standard Set, 60-Piece
I received the die and tap set on time with no issues. I used the set to clean up a blind hole for a stud that wouldn’t go in. The tap and die worked well and the stud went in. The case allows the parts to move around. I will put a spacer in the case to keep the parts in the proper place. Nice price, so it’s great for home use. ... show more

  • They work as expected. Quality of accessories and box leave some to be desired.
Style: Standard Set, 60-Piece
I cross threaded one of the 1/4 inch lead/stainless hurricane shutter mounts in my cement block wall (here in Florida) and it would be a mess to pull it out and try to replace it. I was able to use the 1/4 inch tap to repair the threads and make the existing mount usable. The tap was able to cut metal on what I think is stainless steel in the mount. This was worth most of the cost of this set. As others have noted, the tools that go with this kit are 3rd world quality but the taps and dies themselves seem to be ok. This is a great kit for the homeowner but probably not for industrial use. Due to close quarters, I had to hold the tap with a pair of pliers to do the work, as there was no suitable tool to hold it supplied. As others have noted, after spending some quality time re-arranging all the tools in the case, I took the suggestion to add a piece of cardboard to the inside so that the tools would not bounce out of place anymore. ... show more

  • For the Price a Decent Set, Great for DIY, Not Great for a Pro Shop
Style: Standard Set, 60-Piece
This set seems to be a good bargain for a DIYer who wants a decent general use set for random tasks that come up. The Pros: 1. I measured all the pitches on both the SAE and Metric taps with an Irwin thread pitch gauge and all of mine were spot on. (They also included thread pitch gauges, but I didn't use the included ones) 2. I've used these to tap into stainless steal with no issues. 3. I tested an Irwin tap I have vs. one from this set (same size) and I didn't notice any huge difference in performance for that size (it was 10mm 1.25 pitch). Make no mistake though, the Irwin tap is better, they are just significantly more expensive for a similar set. The Cons: 1. The cheap blow mold case does not keep these all organized well, even if you leave that "sheet" in there. If you expect to move these around a lot you're probably going to need another solution or else you'll go insane with an exploded mess every time you open it up. It also arrived to me in an exploded mess when I opened it. 2. The "tools" they throw in to use the taps/dies are terrible quality and you'll probably want something better. They can probably get the job done in a pinch, but they suck. Conclusion: For how cheap these are you I can't really complain at all. This set does not scream high quality to me at all and I have no idea what the long term reliability will be like, but if you're in a similar position that I am in that you want an "ok" set for the once in a blue moon job you have these should be sufficient. As others have said if you're a "pro" you might want to invest in a name brand set. ... show more

  • Great value and quality for the price.
Style: Standard Set, 60-Piece
I’ve worked with metal for years and have had tap and die sets in the past. I recently moved and a lot of my tools were misplaced so I needed to get a new set of both Metric and SAE but wasn’t trying to break the bank. This set is exactly what I needed. Of course there are better sets out there if you plan to spend 3x the money this cost, but if you are looking for everything you’d need to tap or thread every common size, this is a great deal. *BE SURE YOU KNOW THE CORRECT DRILL BIT SIZE THAT CORRELATES WITH THE TAP YOU WANT…. The complaints about quality, are likely due to those that try to tap a hole too small, because I’ve used this set a lot and it’s still as sharp as when I first purchased it with no chips or breaks. If you know what you’re doing this set won’t disappoint. Great value for the $ spent ... show more

  • Reasonably priced - Case does not hold taps in place well
Style: Standard Set, 60-Piece
Purchased for occasional use in Wood Shop. Price, having SAE and Metric was a deciding factor. One dissapointment was the carrying case. When you carry it closed with the handle the sammler taps come out out their storage place and have to be put back every time you carry it from one place to another. Would be much better if they had a method to retain them in place, maybe a dense foam to press against them when the lid is closed. ... show more
