The die is not a thread cutter, it is for chasing an existing thread. I didn't use the tap yet but I expect it will be the same.

Both the tap and die did a fine job threading the fittings I made for my high pressure air filter. I have made 8 from 1018 steel and one from stainless so far and both are holding up well.
