The kind to buy! Spendy for good reason
Not all 5-gallon buckets are the same! These are the kind you need. I bought the wrong kind twice—all those flimsy buckets are good for is holding yarn or maybe storing the beanie babies that were going to make me rich. It is better to use buckets like these that work with the airtight, spin to open and close, "gamma" lids Those lids are expensive, and the description for them often says something like "these lids fit 5-gallon and 3-gallon buckets" never mentioning that not any old bucket will do; in fact, most buckets don't work. You don't want a cheap bucket with a cheap flat lid. Your dog food will spill, your potting soil will topple, the bucket will split. When there is a storm and you are collecting water to flush the toilets, you need a heavy duty bucket. When survivors of a terrible flood near here were asked what they wished had on hand, they said "Buckets. You can never have enough buckets. You think you have enough buckets. Trust me, you don't." These buckets are the real deal. They're strong. They work with gamma lids. They arrived well protected in a box of the right size that wasn't clumsy to carry. Strongly recommend. ... show more

Lids are tricky to get on.
The buckets are great. The lids are tricky to get on, but very secure once they are on. After trying to push down on the lids, then standing on them without success, I read the other reviewers and tried the clamp idea. It took two, and fifteen minutes with the bucket perched awkwardly on a ledge. Very frustrating. Another reviewer said that they used a rubber mallet without success, so I passed on that at first. But after the clamps, I gave the mallet a try and it was easy-peasy. Just six solid blows and the lid was tight. I wish that instructions had been included. I'll definitely purchase the $4 tool for removing the lids. Otherwise, in the case of actually needing to access the food, I would expect extreme frustration on that end as well. ... show more

We got these to store Mylar bags and bulk food and they work great. We bought gamma lids in addition and they store our food well.

Sturdy buckets but very strong smell that won't go away...is that normal?
Buckets arrived fast & well packed. Nice and sturdy. They have an extremely strong smell however and it's been a few weeks of airing them out and I've tried baking soda, baking soda & vinegar but I cannot get this very strong "chemical" like smell out. I'm worried the food I plan on storing on it will pick up the smell/flavor. Anyone have any advice for me to try? I'm spending a fortune on safe food storage and don't want my stored food ruined...thanks for your time & advice! Other than the smell, I'm happy with my purchase. ... show more

i bought these buckets five years ago and they are falling apart, cracked handles, cracked bottoms, cracked everywhere!. I still have 20 year old buckets that still in working order compared to these. Waste of money as I have to replace them.
