  • Great fitness program for older adults!
When I became a physical therapist 7 years ago I quickly noticed something surprising - there becomes a huge gap in physical abilities in patients over the age of ~55. I would have some patients who were 55-65+ and running 5Ks and half marathons. Then I'd have another patient who was 56 being wheeled into the clinic in a wheelchair by a child who could barely stand, would easily get out of breath, and couldn't take care of themselves. The difference? Neither person usually had any serious medical condition, though both patients tended to have most of the same diagnoses of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, chronic pain, etc. But what stuck out to me was the attitude and perspective. The patient wanting to run that next week had the attitude of "Yeah, it hurts a little but that's just how it is" whereas the patient in the wheelchair tended (not always!) to be more like, "It hurts when I move so I just sit here and watch TV". I fully believe that by our 50s-60s we become the sum of the millions of tiny, seemingly small, and insignificant decisions that we've made over the course of our life. Do you exercise or watch TV? Watch what you eat or survive on fast food? I like Dr. Su's (not Seuss!) book because he presents the research along with the plan. It sounds crazy to so many patients when I tell them that they should be exercising *even if it hurts*. The challenge for PTs and patients alike is finding exercises that are appropriate at different levels of ability. I think this book has a great, realistic plan. If you follow it, start with Level I or II and then progress as able. If you are in excellent shape and find that it becomes too easy I recommend adding 1-2 full-body exercises like squats or step-ups with weight on your back to add to the routines. On the other hand, if chronic pain, arthritis, and other conditions have stopped you from exercising in the past, I implore you - do something! It's hard, I know. But answer this question - would you rather fall asleep at night being sore thinking of all you accomplished OR fall asleep at night thinking about how bad things are and how everything hurts no matter what? No matter our age or anything, we all need to be able to move. The saddest situations that I've come across in my practice have been when a relatively young person (in their 50s) sat down in a chair and was too weak to stand back up. Both times could have been prevented. That's much too young to be like that. Never let that happen to you! Exercise for as long as possible and you'll learn to love the endorphins - they're legal! ;) Good luck! ... show more

  • Great Marketing - Very Little Substance
6 minutes of relevant material and 235 pages+ of fluff and general health and exercise information he regurgitated from other published articles and papers as evidenced by PAGES of footnotes and attributions. Pages and Pages of repeated talking points about the value of exercise. If you think you are going to get an abundance of exercises and workout plans, don't buy this book. There are 4 "sets" of workout regiments based on the readers assessment of their physical condition. Each set has THREE maybe FOUR exercises. Unless you are totally clueless about the benefits of working out and how diet comes into play. Save your money. This Kid (Author) is a marketing genius. ... show more

  • Mom is finally exercising and eating right!
This was a really great and comprehensive read that I learned a lot from so to encourage a healthier lifestyle for my 66 year old mom. My mom has had 2 knee replacements, hip replacement and shoulder surgery, she also has had disc fusing in her neck. Her only form of exercise was walking till she dropped and poor nutrition to keep weight off. Thanks to this book we developed a plan of exercise and functional movements to strengthen her surrounding muscles around her new and ailing joints. I thought the diet section was great too since she was clueless on how her poor nutrition could contribute to her muscles loss and how adding protein and balanced meals fuel energy and support weight loss, without skipping meals. It is so simple and easy to make into a routine 6 minutes twice a day without having to buy a bunch of equipment. I really liked the section about how to be encouraging and motivating for her (as a family meme we) so I can inspire Her and be supportive with her for the life and health she needs and wants! ... show more

  • Simple fitness program for +60 that should actually work
Amazon review: Simple fitness program for +60 that should actually work I've tried so many fitness programs after turning 55, most of them pulled from Pinterest. All of them failed for one reason or another. Dr. Su's 6-Minute Fitness program will break this pattern for anyone. It's easy to understand, easy to follow and bound to be effective. He does a great job of clearly explaining the needs of +60 agers like me, describing the simple exercises, and even includes illustrations so you know you're doing the exercises correctly. What I really love, though, are the key point summaries and action steps at the end of each chapter. When I need to refer to main ideas, it's easy to find them. Like our higher need for protein. That was news to me, but in chapter 12, Dr. Su explains why my age group needs the extra protein, how much we need and where to get it. He includes clear charts for each exercise program and has a website you can access to get even more information and exercises. This is a great little book to use for yourself, or to use to help +60 folks you know. ... show more
