  • An Honest Review
Color: Grey
An Honest Review Just to be perfectly clear, this is my review of the Techni Mobili, Grey 47.5" Computer Desk with File Cabinet and Drawers, Storage Cabinet with Removable Shelf and Ventilation for CPU, Home Office Desk or Computer Workstation with Keyboard Tray. My five-star rating is for the finished, fully assembled product. The desk has an elegant, modern, clean appearance, with three drawers that smoothly glide open and shut along their tracks, plus a cabinet door that easily opens and closes too. Its movable keyboard shelf also easily slides out and in along its tracks, which provides extra room for your legs to extend underneath, if you have to place the desk snug against a wall. I just finished assembling this product and so I cannot comment about its performance over time, but I feel positive that it will earn its keep as a much-needed addition to my home working space. Having said all that, however, let's get real about the assembly: Customers who report requiring only four hours to assemble this desk deserve praise, because I would consider such a pace very fast. One customer who reported requiring only fifteen or twenty minutes to assemble this particular desk is either a magician or a not-very-honest individual, or, at best, someone who has a distorted sense of time. I would like to meet the person who could assemble this desk by themselves with the provided screwdriver in fifteen or twenty minutes. Maybe Amazon placed that person's review with the wrong product. This particular desk took me over eleven hours, paced over a period of four days. For someone who has never assembled anything like this (me), the assembly is definitely NOT simple -- it is straightforward, but involved, and most likely a little scary when you first see all the parts and hardware. The positive thing, though, is that the instructions are very clear, in my opinion, and the individual parts are clearly labeled. The Techni Mobili company, thus, gets high marks for clarity and organization here. For my delivery, a couple of the tags that label the parts had fallen off, but as a reasonably intelligent person, I figured out what they were by just observing one part's similarity to another part. WHAT TO EXPECT: The desk arrives in two boxes -- one large, one smaller. Both boxes are extremely heavy and completely taped all around with no cut-out handles to help move them. Unless you are a weightlifter with vice-grip hands, you will NOT be able to lift these boxes -- you either have to walk the boxes corner-to-corner and end-over-end (if you are by yourself) or use a hand truck to move them to the spot where you do the assembly. You'll need a knife to cut the tape from around all the edges of the boxes. Once you move the boxes and get them opened, you will find a very well-packed group of parts -- more high marks for the Techni Mobili company for great packaging. Now the absolute first thing you should do is follow the instruction to take an inventory, making sure that all the parts are there -- do NOT rush through this -- if something is missing, then call the company at the number provided to get replacement parts. All parts for my delivery were there, so I had a good start and didn't have to bother customer service. As you unpack and check off the parts, using the pictured list in the instructions, place the parts where all the numbers are readily visible. Staying organized and methodical is the key to success here. Read every word of the instructions, and study the pictures. This is a construction project that requires focused thinking over an extended period of time. It's probably best to consider it an ongoing work in progress over multiple days, rather than a marathon that you try to finish in a single day. After doing the inventory, the next thing I would recommend is to find one of the short videos online that explains how furniture cam bolts and cam locks work. Even with the good illustrations in this desk's instructions, I did not get how these devices work, but after a video, they made perfect sense. I also recommend that you remove all of the cam locks -- a few cam locks in my order fell out anyway from jostling that happens during shipping and handling. I did not trust that these would stay positioned properly to allow parts to connect flush. With the understanding you gain from watching a video, you will be more certain to position these pieces correctly so that they function as they should. CRITICISMS: For the most part, my experience with assembling the desk was fairly straightforward -- not easy, as I said earlier, but not mind-blowingly difficult either. If you just pace yourself, take breaks, look at it as a learning experience, and enjoy each stage of the progress, then it ends up being a fulfilling venture with a great payoff. One step that I found particularly difficult was attaching the final runner of the large drawer to the inside of the case that the drawer slides into. Another sticking point was attaching the long tubes that help support the very top of the desk -- the screwdriver is too short and too close to the tube to allow the grip required to fully tighten each screw. I had to thoroughly soap each screw with softened bar soap to be able to accomplish this feat. Also, by this step, the cross-shaped blades of the Phillips head screwdriver were degraded enough to compromise the ability of the screwdriver to stay connected with the screw, which made the tightening process even more difficult. Yes, I did the whole assembly using this one screwdriver provided with the order. Having lived through the assembly and seeing the result, I would certainly recommend this desk to people willing to do what is required to own it. ... show more

  • Great Product
Color: Espresso
If I could give this a ten star review, I would. The desk is solid. The instructions were well written and included very explicit pictures to show the assembly steps. Each package of parts was clearly labeled with stickers that easily came off once completed. A screwdriver was included. The door was level and the hinges were easy to install. The drawers fit perfectly and function wonderfully. The keyboard tray was also easy to put together and it wasn't a greasy mess. This desk is worth every penny it cost. I have put together several desks at work and none compare to this one. You will not be disappointed if you purchase it. ... show more

  • Good quality desk. . . However (If I could give partial stars in rating, I would give 4.8 or 4.9
Color: Espresso
I've been using this desk for only a few hours after setting it up, but it appears to be quite good quality. Certainly it is solid and fairly heavy. Things to know, however: 1) If you think you are going to set this up in an hour or so and get to work, think again. It took me about 4.5 - 5.0 hours to complete the setup. 2) the instructions for setup are good, but be sure to read them carefully. Don't just look at the pictures. 3) Suggestion for the manufacturer: the cam locks work well, but easily fall out of where you placed them, in shipping, especially, but also when unpacking or moving pieces during assembly, especially with the smaller size. I think a better idea would to put all of the cam locks into bags with the other hardware. These are too easy to miss when unpacking or during assembly. 4) For the buyer: please be careful with these cam locks as they fall out of where placed by the manufacturer and they are easy to misplace. They are needed for assembly. DON'T LOSE THEM! 5) Thankfully, the manufacturer has included a packet of hardware "spares" which is helpful. But, there is only one spare for each hardware part, so you still need to be careful cuz there are a LOT of parts. 6) When you complete assembly, CELEBRATE your hard, good work, and enjoy the desk! ... show more

  • Sturdy, nice looking table
Color: Espresso
Very nice mid size table with good finishings and great functionality. Has plenty of storage space, retractable keyboard shelf is also very convenient. It took some time to put together, but relatively easy as the instructions are very clear. Definitely a great value for your money!

  • Don't Waste Your Money
Color: Grey
This thing is a nightmare to put together. To start, one drawer front was damaged from the factory - the box had no damage on it. The coupler bolts that attach to the screws in the drawers won't completely engage so they fall out after a few times the drawer is used. These coupler bolts are also very delicate; we bent two trying to get them to engage. The screws that attach the rails for the drawer slides are small enough that the rails pop off if they are completely screwed in. The instructions are completely wacky in that they ask you to put something completely together and then tell you that you have to add another part that would've been easier to add before everything was put together. Overall, if we hadn't completely de-boxed this and spent the three hours putting it together that we did, I'd happily send it back for a refund. As it is, we'll have to live with it and, by the looks of it, we'll be replacing it in just a few years because it is not sturdy, it is not made with quality materials, and it will probably not last. Save your money and buy something else that is better quality. ... show more

  • High quality, well designed, and not too hard to build
Color: Espresso
The title says most of it. The material feels like particle board with a plastic veneer, but it looks clean and nice. There is a lot of storage space between all of the different drawers and shelves, which I really appreciate. The assembly process is also not too bad (most of the work is building the boxes that house the drawers and cabinet), and it easily breaks down into 3 parts for moving and transport. Highly recommended for someone looking for a cheap and practical desk ... show more
