I used this to both look at files on an old M.2 NVMe SSD, and initialize a new M.2 NVMe on one computer which doesn't have a way to interface with M.2 NVMe to later install it into a different computer that does. I recently purchased this M.2 SSD Enclosure and I'm extremely impressed with its performance and build quality. The enclosure is made of high-quality aluminum and has a sleek, modern design that looks great on my desk. Setting up the enclosure was a breeze - all I had to do was insert my M.2 SSD drive and plug the enclosure into my laptop's USB port. I love the case. It's easy to put in and take out NVME drives which is what I am doing regularly. The case is aluminum which should dissapate the heat. There is a pad in the box, but I can't seem to get it into the case with the drive. I'll keep trying. It does heat up if you are transferring 256GB Disk images! However, I was doing some testing and was not getting USB 3.0 speeds. I checked it with my Linux machine with an lsusb -t command and it told me it was connected to a USB 3.0 HUB with 5000M transfer rate, but the drive was only connected at 480M speed. I didn't have a USB-C port on the computer to test, but checked it with USBview on a windows machine. With the USB-A to USB-C cable it showed NO 3.0 compatibility. I tried the USB-C to USB-C cable and it showed up as 3.0 compatible. I had a USB-A to USB-C cable from my Dell monitor and tried that. That showed compatibility at 3.0 in the exact same port. Not happy with the amount of time it took me to figure that out, and not happy to have gotten a bad cable. ... show more

One of the big lessons is to pay attention to the product specifications. Some enclosures say SATA compatible, but they're really not. This one is but you have to read the model number to make sure that you're getting what you asked for. This enclosure is fairly simple and has some unique qualities about it in that you don't fuss around with a whole bunch of those itty-bitty screws that you're going to drop on the carpet and that you find impossible to replace unless you buy a whole pack of them. The case simply opens with slight pressure and you install your device from there. Here's the thing… I was installing a WD blue SATA M.2 that I'm using for an external backup drive. The M.2 device had to be installed "upside down" with the blue label on the downside and the circuits on the upside because of the way that the M.2 pins are installed. That is not a showstopper but it's just odd. It all worked and I transferred some mega files and tested the speed on Crystal disc and it came out about 560 MBs which is just about right for a M.2 SATA drive. By the way, I used the SATA M.2 device because with a SATA port, they're only going to get just so much speed anyway; a fast M.2 is only going to run at the speed of the port anyway so why put an expensive M.2 in an enclosure as an external drive. It all worked! It did not take me long time and I transferred some big files, about 30 GB in a few minutes and so I'm happy with the purchase. Again, read the product specifications because if the enclosure does not support a SATA device, you going to have trouble initializing the drive and using disk partition software is not going to help, so just read instructions. ... show more

I needed to transfer from one SSD to a larger one in my laptop. Using Clonezilla and this device, I was able to clone from the smaller SSD to the new one without a hitch. This is a remarkable device for those who wish to maintain the integrity of their drive images.
