The media could not be loaded. I'd purchased some Expanded Polystyrene (eps) foam from Silverlake on Amazon for a craft project. Bought this tool kit so I could cut and shape it. Couldn't be happier with this purchase. The foam came with a little loose shrink wrap around it, so it was kinda smashed (I have a separate review for that, this is just words to the wise if you buy foam online). The various heads on this tool heated quickly - like within:15 seconds it was hot enough to work. There's no temperature control - it's just on or off. But that seems to be the industry standard- particularly for an inexpensive tools such as this. I've never used one of these before I can see where it can take a little getting used to. The wire head seem to make very smooth cuts whereas the metal heads sort of just melted everything and left a more textured surface. (see picture I uploaded for examples). All the heads worked well. I just need to learn a little finesse- they are hot and the EPS foam melts fast! I'm not advocating for this, but I was in a bit of a hurry so I swapped heads frequently. Once I powered off the wand it seemed to cool as quickly as it had heated. Granted, I DID NOT touch any of the metal heated bits, only the base of each head to change them out. So I was able to work pretty seamlessly by just switching unit off giving it :15 seconds to cool and swapping the heads out. Again this may not work for you... use common sense and don't burn yourself. Also, I wore a respirator while doing this in a very well ventilated area, so I don't know how much it smelled- but be mindful of those brain cells! One side note for beginners here: the thick metal heads melted EPS so quickly that I ended up sort of caramelizing or burning a few spots. Not a big deal I could kind of scrape them off and they were just a light brownish color. The tool seems well made and sturdy enough.     • Good solution but needs improvement
This was purchased for creating stage props out of Styrofoam insulation. For the intended purpose it works great but I'm not sure how long it will last. Even on low voltage (around 8 volts) the shaping tools bend under mild pressure. The plastic around the shaping tip has also begun to melt. The wire cutting tool begins to glow under low voltage. I haven't tried it at full power but I can't imagine that it would last very long at high temperature. The kit does come with a spool of extra wire. I would recommend that users start at the lowest voltage and work their way up to determine the minimum heat level to cut their desired material. Another needed improvement would be a longer cord - or - a pocket clip for the regulator so that it can be clipped to a belt or pocket. As it is, the regular ends up flopping on the ground as I work. All that being said, I'm still giving this 4 stars because it has made my project drastically easier and is less than half the price of a professional-level hot wire cutter. ... show more

    • Wish I had one of these a long time ago.
I am a cake decorator/baker and I use styrofoam for my cake boards. These are such a pain to cut with a knife or a fine tooth saw. I bought this and it has worked very well with the exception of one of the attachments shorts out the unit when I attach it. It was too late for me to return it when I discovered this problem. This worked awesome to cut styrofoam insulation for my garage doors. Several ways to adapt it to cut a variety of sizes and applications. Thrilled with this purchase! No styrofoam pieces floating around when cutting with this tool.

Maybe it's my fault and this should I nly be used on white Styrofoam. But I used it on pink insulation from and both ends stopped working....
