  • Make your own Bluetooth hearing protection.
Style: Over-the-head
I've had the 3M WorkTunes Connect Bluetooth overhead hearing protection earmuffs for a while now. The seal tends to break when moving my head around and the quality of the sound is lackluster. I also have big ears and they are uncomfortable for me. I tried the ISOtunes Link Aware for one work day and then returned them. They sealed even less than my 3M WorkTunes and there was a slight staticky sound added to music. They also felt much heavier. After that disappointment I decided to avoid the hearing protection earmuffs with built-in speakers and Bluetooth all together because they seem to do just an average job of blocking noise and reproducing sound at best. I decided to get these 3M Peltor Optime 105 due to their higher rating of sound dampening and because the earcups are deeper and roomier. Well, everything worked out for the better. The 105 is better at blocking noise, have plenty of room for earbuds and are lighter and more comfortable. I am using a pair of Soundpeats Sonic Bluetooth earbuds because they sound great for the price and run for 12-15 hours in-between charges. I also considered the top rated 3M Peltor X5A model but felt that the larger size and price wasn't worth the slight improvement of blocking out noise. I read that the X5A is a little better at blocking out voices where as for my application I need to block out loud power tools on construction sites. It was also nice to see that the 3M Peltor Optime 105 earmuffs are assembled in the USA, albeit with globally sourced materials. I also looked into the Decibel Defense brand was turned away by the reviews. They look to be lower quality than the 3M with just a plastic headband connecting the earmuffs together, which will be prone to cracking. ... show more

  • Great product horrible delivery delay.
Style: Behind-the-head
Let’s start with the time it took to get these delivered. Not good, we’re talking about two months. So why the 5, Stars? Annoying wait time but superb ear protection. They have an adjustable strap that goes over your head so you can wear a ball cap with these. You can wear a welding helmet, you can put on a full face clear visor for grinding. Best sound attenuation of all the ones I own. Yea yea I have a lot of ear protectors. Cheaper ones for general use, special ones for shooting, and those wonderful ones for serious ongoing noise like running a grinder for hours. These are comfortable, they work, but the ear muffs and the head band wore out after 8 years and I needed new ones. I recommend them and I did buy them again. But order well ahead of time because the delivery process truly sucks. ... show more

  • Stays where you want them. Super quiet.
Style: Behind-the-head
I pair these up with ear buds and a wide brim floppy sun hat for tractor mowing. I think the top strap is essential for keeping them in place, particularly when you start sweating. They are very quiet and offer some great sound when combined with ear buds. Comfort tip: I put the ear pieces of my sunglasses above the ear cups, otherwise you’ll get hot spots. ... show more

  • Some adjustment may be required but works great!
Style: Behind-the-head
These work great when they are properly set up to fit. I don't have a thick neck or an abnormal curvature in my neck, nonetheless, I had to bend the wires up so that the wires don't hit the back of my neck preventing me from tilting my head up even a little bit. This did not take much effort with properly sized and adjusted vise grips. I have to ask 3M, were these tested on humans before finalizing the design? I admit that I didn't read the manual. : o ) They provide a consistent level of ear protection with good clamp pressure to seal the ears properly even with prescription glasses on. I sometimes use them with ear plugs as well to protect my hearing when working with extremely loud equipment. Low clamp pressure has been a problem with my brand name forestry hard hat that I bought a few years ago. I could not get a good seal with integral ear muffs. with or without glasses. Now wear them with a hard hat with molded in recesses for the ears which is what I've been waiting for ever since I bought my first forestry hard hat. I also have more options with knit hats and caps when working in the sun. ... show more

  • Block Barking Dogs, Trains, Construction Truck Noise
Style: Over-the-head
These are worth their weight in gold. These block out noises that my $300 noise-cancelling headphones that I use for air travel don't. I live in a noisy area, with barking dogs, trains, and construction truck noise that used to frequently wake me up in the middle of the night or early in the morning. These headphone block out barking dogs, trains (engine noise and train whistles), and the "beep....beep....beep" that construction trucks (and trash trucks) make when they are backing up. These headphones reduce these noises to almost unintelligible. (At lease in my opinion.). Note, though, I do get occasional air traffic (planes and helicopters), and they don't do as well at blocking out aircraft noise. Also, I also have light car traffic, and that noise gets blocked. But can't say if they will block out heavy street traffic or freeway traffic. I found out by chance how well these work when my 15 year-old noise-cancelling headphones started falling apart. I remembered I had purchased these 3M headphones as ear protection while using yard equipment. So I dug them up and found that they worked better. After I experienced how well these 3M headphones work, I bought a couple more pairs, should 3M discontinue making them. I either go to sleep with them on or have them on my nightstand to put on if I need them. If you're a side sleeper or a stomach sleeper, it might take some getting used to sleeping with these. But it beats getting your sleep disturbed by barking dogs, trains, trucks, etc. ... show more
