Description

Cody Kaufman slept at 56 different locations, rode the bus 11,492 miles, and spent just $2,563 during his 2012 road trip to every ballpark in Major League Baseball. In his new book, 30 Tickets To Paradise, Kaufman shares the wild stories about how he did it, as well as the people, places, and cultures that inspired him along the way. 30 Tickets To Paradise commences in Los Angeles with the crash-and-burn portrayal of Kaufman’s quarter-life crisis, a phase he later overcomes while chasing every Major League ballpark across the United States and Canada. During his journey, he bicycles 625 miles through California, interacts with loony Greyhound passengers, interviews local celebrities, instigates practical jokes, sleeps on random couches, sprints the bases at Tiger Stadium, watches a tragic death unfold, and much more. With both comedic and dramatic chapters, each stop features an unpredictable story and ranking guide that vicariously transports readers on the ultimate baseball adventure. In the end, after a disastrous mistake nearly jeopardizes his goal, Kaufman gains spiritual enlightenment as he achieves his lifelong dream in climactic fashion. Although themed around baseball, 30 Tickets To Paradise is Cody Kaufman’s true story about adventure, inspiration, and life. His underlying message resonates with adults of all backgrounds, and captivates baseball and non-baseball enthusiasts alike. Read more

  • A great read from an author with heart
Cody Kaufman may not be a name you recognize, but don't let that stop you from buying this book. A very interesting, heartfelt story of a young man's quarter life crisis which led to his quest to visit every baseball park in America. The story is laced with humorous anecdotes and baseball trivia. Even if you are not a baseball fan, you will enjoy reading about what it's like to travel by Greyhound bus, eat a hotdog in 30 different parks, be invited to stay on the couches of complete strangers (it was the first time I heard of Couch Surfing), and manage to do all of this during the entire baseball season for around $2,000. His inventive rankings of the ballparks is worth the price of admission. I had the good fortune to meet the author and was lucky enough to get a signed edition. It sits proudly in my collection of books I won't give away after reading. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • One Summer, 30 Stadiums, and a lot more!
I bought this book because I have traveled to all 30 baseball stadiums and also have written a book about it called 30 by 30. 30 Tickets to Paradise focuses more on the journey and adventure than the actual games and ballparks. Cody is a brilliant writer and I was very impressed with the route he took especially never flying or booking hotels and doing this all in one summer. I laughed at many of the stories Cody provided. He experienced many kind acts along the way to reach his ultimate goal. Overall I would recommend this to any baseball fan. I just wish there was more about the actual stadiums in the book. Definitely not the greatest baseball book I have ever read but definitely worth the time to read it. Thanks Cody for sharing your story and I hope you do all the football ones next. ... show more

  • Phillie Phanatic #4- Are you kidding?
What a fun read. Enjoyed the adventures tremendously and hope to duplicate Cody's trip - it is on my "bucket list" although I hope to find a reasonable hotel rather than a couch. Any baseball fan would love to make this trek across the country. Ok, my only argument is the Phillie Phanatic being listed #4- that is absolutely irresponsible and should be changed immediately as their is nothing more entertaining than the Phanatic. Read the book, you will enjoy it. ... show more

  • Fun and different take on the ballparks
More about the journey and the people than the parks and games but still very enjoyable. Can't say I agree with his rankings but the criteria and the explanations were certainly entertaining

  • Not really a book about visiting each ballpark.
I love travel memoirs. Even more, I love baseball road trip books. So I figured this one would be a slam dunk... First, Mr. Kaufman is a good writer. He knows how to weave a story and include humor and enough hooks to keep the reader turning pages. Unfortunately, for a book touting a journey to all 30 big league stadiums, he has surprisingly little baseball related content. The chapter on AT&T Park (his favorite) is actually about drunken hijinks with college buddies. The chapter on Yankee Stadium is about finding a place to stay in New York. I'd take a stab at saying that in 30 ballpark chapters, he touches his experience at less than ten stadiums. The author takes quite some time to outline his personal evaluation system (Kaufman Ballpark Index) for ballparks including such scientific categories as "Best Looking Females". Each chapter includes a brief evaluation of each aspect of the parks he visits (but frequently neglected to write about), and then at the end of the book he refuses to name his favorite park explaining that each fan wouldn't trade their home park for anyone else's (his example of A's fans not wanting to trade ballparks with San Fran is totally bogus in my humble opinion... they'd swap theirs for AT&T in a heartbeat). He spends surprisingly little time writing about his brilliant method of travel, nor how he planned out his schedule and which ballparks to visit in which order. All this to say, there are much better baseball road trip books out there. I can't believe there are so many five-star reviews of this book. If Kaufman had chosen to just write about his road trip I think I would have enjoyed it more than if I had started reading expecting to hear about baseball's stadiums. This book made me think I could write a better one - or at least one that would actually get in to the experience of going to each of these ballparks. ... show more

  • Super Jealous
I have to admit that I have always wanted to go to every ballpark in one summer. But as one gets older he realizes that life may get in the way. It was fun to hear about a young man's journey. This book has an amazing perspective on life and baseball. It was a good quick read. It was also filled with some helpful information if you are ever planning on going MLB stadiums. ... show more

  • entertaining read
Not so much about baseball, but about the journey..... Very easy read and one of those books that you just can't put down!

  • Nice Ride!
I really enjoyed the book. I doubt I'll ever get to any of these stadiums but the author made me feel like I was there with him! Being young, he made you feel the freedom and adventure of seeing the country through his eyes for a summer. You don't have to be a baseball fan to like the book, but it certainly helps if you are. ... show more
