These materials are neat. They can keep a lot of heat inside your work area. I've used it with full blown metal melting furnaces, and they keep the heat in. I tested this with a torch, and it kept the heat from damaging the materials behind it. Exactly what you want. There's a big thing that you should know about it. Well, about any of these materials. They're like fiberglass. The dust is really bad for you. It has to be encapsulated by something. If you're using it inside something like the body of a stove or oven, it's encapsulated by the metal. If you're using it as the liner for a metal melting furnace, you'll need to coat the exposed fire side with a refractory cement or other hardeners. If you don't, the surface will erode, and there's a good chance that you'll be breathing fiberglass dust. If you want a fireproof surface to do work on, use this stuff as the center of a brick of refractory cement. Wear your respirator and gloves while putting it together. It's easy to handle, and can be cut with scissors. It's just dangerous for you to breathe, and you can get tiny fiberglass (ceramic) splinters that'll make your skin itch. ... show more

I use this for several purposes. I put it between guitar bodies and wiring when I am soldering to prevent any burns or spatters messing up the guitar. I have used it to lay hot parts on to cool. I have set it under a tabletop grill and wood to prevent any scorching. It works great for all these things without a mark. This is similar to a standard ceramic insulation blanket that you might find on a car muffler or something similar. It works great and is easy to use. I was able to cut a smaller piece using workshop scissors. Just be aware that this is basically fiberglass, so you will want to wear gloves and other protection when cutting and folding it. ... show more

The size is good. Installation/setup: Use gloves and a mask when using this fiber insulation. I also recommend long sleeves. The fiber can be cut to fit with scissors or a razor knife. Final thoughts: I used this to create a wall for my temporary raku kiln. I followed some plans made by an expert in the field. I used hardware cloth which is a wire mesh and attached it with wire and ceramic disks. I made a box of this kind of blanket and some fire brick. There are videos online with suggestions and I recommend going to your local library to find more books and information on these types of kilns. The insulation blanket in our stove is old and needs to be replaced. This should work fine and the price of $18.99 isn't bad. I will be sure to wear gloves and a good mask while handling, and wash my clothes in their own load afterwards since the last thing I want to do is breathe fibers from this.

This is typical of other fiber insulation. The biggest draw to this one is the price (i.e. it's a good value). The density of the insulation is what I would expect for this type of thing.
