  • Good. Not the most convenient, though.
Update! I was contacted by 1more’s customer support team, they wanted to let me know that my input was appreciated. I love that they took the effort to reach out and acknowledge my feedback. They also told me that they wanted to send me a complementary pair of quad drivers as a token of gratitude. Just responding to my feedback alone would have made me want to update my review. Tldr: cool packaging, over ear design could be tricky for people with glasses. Audio quality is greatly dependent on ear tips used. Foam was best for me. Highs can be a bit shrill. Unfortunately going to return. I'll start off by saying that I seriously loved 1more's Quad drivers that I bought them twice. The construction of them was amazing. Very durable and rugged. I took them everywhere. I unfortunately lost my last pair. I was looking to buy another pair but saw the penta driver on sale. First impressions: As soon as I opened the package, I was greeted with the familiar 1more packaging. I had the box from my previous quads to do a side by side comparison. Now, the box functions the same as the previous version albeit no cover to slide off. As always the actual staging of the earbuds is great. 1more managed to make a more compact box this time around. Nice packaging. I noticed a weird smell coming from the cable. Like sharpie. I guess I got used to it though since I didn’t notice it after a while. I personally prefer the cable on the quads. This one’s a slick plastic. The weird noise you might notice from cables touching stuff is noticeably less compared to the quads, however. Audio quality: I tried them out with the medium silicone tips and was disappointed. The sound was flubby and seriously missing low end. To make up for that I tried the medium foam tips to get a better seal. Low end was definitely better. This was into my phone through a dongle. I also have an ifi hip dac 2 that I listened through. My album of preference for comparison is Thriller. With the hip dac I noticed the bass was tighter and a lot less flubby. The last couple of days I noticed that I can’t turn up the volume to a comfortable level without experiencing harsh highs. This forces me to bring down the volume to where I can tolerate it. Then the rest of the music sounds dull. I actually enjoyed listening through the penta drivers but not as much as the quads. This leads to my biggest gripe. Comfort and fit: I wear glasses and contacts (sometimes). Others have also mentioned that getting them on is tricky. The earbuds rotate 360 on the connector. So each time I bring them out I have to double check the orientation and the position of the buds. It’s not anything serious but it’s annoying when I have to get them on over my glasses. The quads were much more convenient. I don’t have large ear holes and the included medium foam tips were a great fit. Whenever I got the quads I would order a set of foam tips from comply. They didn’t have a recommended set on their website yet, however. Like I mentioned earlier a foam tip helped give me a better seal and retain the low end. I can’t wear many types of earbuds or headphones since they usually leave my ears feeling sore. Honestly, the Pentas weren’t the worst in that regard but they weren’t the best either. The over the ear design didn’t leave my ears as sore as I would have thought. I wore these frequently and only experienced soreness after around two hours of wear. Of course I prefer the quads. It’s one of the only earbud designs I’ve been able to wear comfortably. I’m not much of an expert so I did my best to give my honest opinion on these. The pentas are cool. I’m just very particular about fit. I’ll probably return these. I might be a bit biased since I loved the quads and I’m considering getting them for a third time. ... show more

  • Good full sound, good fit, pricey
I am comparing these to; 1) BOSE Soundsport wired in ear noise cancelling, 2) CCA 12 wired monitored, 3) BASN Metalen wired monitor... The BOSE has superior sound quality and noise cancelling, they are the best in ear headphones I have ever owned... BUT Bose does not manufacture these anymore. The CCA has a much better price point and is a better value than the 1MORE pair, but the 1MORE pair has a more full sound profile (as one should expect from 5 drivers), and the CCA is a bit 'tinny', that is the highs twang a bit. And I think one of the earbuds from the CCA pair was not producing volume like the other, so I would have sent it back anyways. The BASN pair didn't stack up to the CCA despite being twice the price. I am not tickled about the price of these 1MORE Penta pair, but lacking the time to peruse more brands and not being able to buy another pair of BOSE in ear wired noise cancelling earbuds... I will stick with the 1MORE ... show more

  • Needs a good DAC
Follow up: The included DAC is spotty with calling on iPhone 15. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. Ordered the Apple headphones adapter when needing to make calls. Music always works with both. Mileage may vary with Android or PC use. I’ve not tested that. These are great for the price. They included a $30 Amazon coupon when I ordered. They ended up only being $30 more than the quads. I figured since these included a DAC (USB C adapter) that was a good deal. Admittedly, I only used that once. It sounded a little flat connected to my iPhone 15. Once I connected them to my iFi Hip DAC and enabled the Xbass feature they really shined. They sound much more expensive now. Very full and rich with deep bass that rival floor standing speakers. But only when they’re connected to my DAC. They’re really light and comfy. I suspect I’ll use these often. So buyer beware! These *can* sound fantastic. But not with the DAC they bundle with them. It’s very convenient but doesn’t push enough power to them to open them up to their full potential. ... show more

  • Cumbersome to put on, cumbersome to take out
Maybe it's just me but I find these earphones with detachable MMCX connector a bit cumbersome to put on and cumbersome to take out. Notwithstanding, I tried liking these earphones because of the glowing reviews I read in here. I was thinking there must be something I missed in the sound that's why I'm not impressed. So I tried comparing them with Emotiva's Airmotiv GR1 which was the only headphones I have in my workplace. I was thinking the 1More Penta would thrash the GR1 because the GR1s are over-ear while the Pentas are in-ear. To my surprise the GR1s sounded better i.e., clearer while the Pentas are muddier. Soundstage is also larger on the GR1s and the sound is more dynamic while the Penta's is compressed. Sorry but I have to return the Penta. ... show more

  • Not what I expected for the price.
I have had several different types of in-ear phones. Because of how I use them, I prefer wired. These just don't have the sound quality of an in-ear headphone in this price range. Virtually no base at all. Rather disappointing sound. I have had $20 in-ear headphones that sounded as good as these. For listening to talk, they are okay. For music, the quality is just not there. ... show more
