This robust device offers two different ways (4-way cross-split or just a 2-way split) to make kindling or split smaller logs. This feature means you can use it twice as long before sharpening—just flip it over. With a 6.6" opening, it accommodates all but the largest logs, which would likely require a larger, powered splitter or a splitting maul anyway. Assembling it probably took less time than removing the packaging, but on the positive side, there were no rubs or scuff marks on anything. I'm sure normal use of the splitter will result in many battle scars, but at least it starts off in pristine condition. The blades were sharp, allowing me to start splitting wood immediately after some basic assembly. I'm uncertain about the quality of the sharpening stones, but I'll probably just use a file or angle grinder for speed. I used a 2.5lb drilling hammer (handheld sledgehammer), and it powered through dry logs like they weren't there. I also appreciate the fact that you can attach it to a large stump or log, so you don't have to kneel or bend over the entire time. The not-so-good: The gloves it came with are just cloth, and you'd be better off with almost any other leather or synthetic work gloves.

I have another similar product that my son “borrowed” so I got this to replace it. Unlike similar splitters, this one is reversible. One side splits logs in half while the other side quarters them. As the splitter really needs to be bolted down because it tends to fall over in use if not secured, it’s not practical to use both features. It is much easier and safer to split logs this way than the traditional way with a maul or axe. Just tap the log onto the blade then hit it a few times with a mallet to split it. One side has crossed blades so it will split logs into quarters. This can be a challenge on logs with knots or twisted grain, but works well on clear logs. I prefer to use the other side which splits logs in half, especially since the splitter works on logs barely larger than 6” in diameter. (My opinion could be different if I had gotten the larger version of this tool.) It comes with a cover, rubber blade protectors, a sharpening stone, screws to secure it, and gloves… a good starter kit. In general, it has more features and extra items in the kit, but doesn’t appear as rugged as my old similar splitter. And it is sharper.

Love the concept. Love the low price. But this failed after using it for 15 minutes. The structure itself did not break. The internal threading on one of the bolt holes stripped. When I was finished making kindling I brought this back in the garage and noticed one of the bolts was missing. I was able to find it on the ground outside (minor miracle). When I went to put it back in the bolt would just spin. Luckily they provide extra bolts in the packaging so I thought I was all good. But same situation when I tried a new bolt. Any bolt I tried just spins which means the threading inside the unit is stripped. No way to fix it. I tried wrapping the bolt with teflon tape. But that didn't help which means it was a fairly serious failure. The other gripe I have is that this version I got is very small. So unless you are cutting down 6" logs you will have issues with the wood getting stuck. At least if you are using the side that cuts the wood into 4 pieces. The little blades that make the second cut (so into 4 pieces) is far down the unit so the wood doesn't really have room to split freely. It often gets stuck. Very stuck. I am returning this and I will look for a much taller version that doesn't use bolts. Splitting wood is a violent process so these have to be beefy. Might have to spring for the expensive version because I love how convenient this type of product is. Makes quick (and safer) work of making kindling. Oh well.

This firewood and kindling splitter is great. It came with the cover, gloves, sharpener, and blade covers. I like that you can flip it over and use either side should the blade on one side get a little dull. It works exactly as shown. It does need to be assembled upon arrival. It seemed a bit unstable as it was getting put together but once it’s all together it’s fairly sturdy. It doesn’t need to be taken apart to fit inside the storage bag. Definitely a must have should you use your fireplace much or, like myself, go camping. The storage bag makes it convenient to take along.
