This set comes with three water-based markers to write on the burlap - black, gold and silver. They all write and color well on the burlap but against the brown of the burlap they can be too light depending on how far away the banner will be. The pens have no odor. I don't have a whiteboard to try it on but the black marker says it is a whiteboard marker. You could always use paint to make brighter letters. Outside or inside use is not a problem but water is depending on what you used - washable, permanent marker or paint The banner pieces are stiff. They don't fray easily. They are sprayed/coated with something which makes them stiffer than plain burlap. The banner is pre-strung. It comes with a lot of extra string so you can easily slide the pieces where you want them to be and cut the string to length needed. In one of the pictures on the page, it shows two banners. Slide the string through the number of banners you need leaving extra string at each end and cut. The stencils are thick and stiff plastic. For future use, they have tabs that can connect the letters so you have an even line with even spacing. For use on the burlap, I used pins to hold the stencil letters in place before coloring them in. Drawing an outline with a pencil does not work. Aligning the letters on the banner pieces can be difficult depending on your ability to just eye it or to use a ruler. Depending on what you used to write on the burlap, the stencils can be cleaned although that isn't necessarily required for reuse. ... show more

This banner seems more durable and higher quality than the typical cardboard and plastic banners. Its more sustainable since it is made from burlap, but the stencils are unknown plastic. Granted, that is the nature of most stencils, they could have been made with silicone or a metal to be more sustainable, but then the price would probably go up. The stencils are strong and well-made. At $10, this is a great value. I like the natural color of the burlap. It does come with some pens to use, but other similar pens could also be used if you have your own. The size looks about right and it should function well for both birthdays (front side) and Thanksgiving (backside) for years to come. ... show more

Very handy Banner Kit! Comes with full alphabet of unserifed capital letter stencils plus a heart! Three markers, black, silver and gold, help you lay out your design. Fifteen pieces of stiff pennant shaped burlap flags, about 5x 7” overall. this is enough to spell many things, like HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CONGRADUATIONS ( haha), JUST MARRIED, LEMONADE .. use your imagination! best way to stencil these is probably thin coats of spray paint ( not thick , but several thin layers) OR dry brush with a large stencil brush and successive thin coats of some latex house paint, applied very dry. This is a light enough color burlap for lettering to show up against and should go together and work very well as all of the proper components are provided. ... show more
