  • It's Hard to Go Wrong with Black Floss
Color: Black
… especially at a good bulk price. I don't care what anyone says about color-fastness, my new dark and bright colors get made into loose skeins (like for dying) and rinsed in a ton of cold water, dried, and wound on bobbins. Factory dyes are usually set quite fast, so I don't foul up the fibers with vinegar or salt in the water (which is just an old magic ritual that never had a basis in dye chemistry). The problem, if it exists, is *excess of set dye,* that has to be washed out like it were microscopic sand (same thing with dark and bright fabrics). That said, this is an effective black cotton floss. I had been wanting to do a hanging in redwork style, but in black, which is like line-drawing with embroidery, also called thread etching. This big pack gave me the final shove to start working on it. Doing the best of the flying machines that didn't work means I need a variety of thread weights, so I can couch down several to get a good-looking strut or wire, without it looking like it might be made of rope, so I can just use two or more strands of the floss. It'll take a while, but it'll be fun. If I were still costuming, I would use this for Renaissance blackwork. I was torn about maybe getting the white package -- I have a lot of lovely Victorian/Edwardian whitework patterns (there's a nice book of patterns available here), but the Failed Flyers will keep me busy enough. If you find a thread keeps kinking and knotting -- it's not the thread. It's the technique they didn't teach you. Pause now and then to drop the needle and let the thread spin until still: you're getting it too twisted, because handing the needle through fabric can do that. If the thread gets threadbare "too fast," remember that embroidery thread should only be cut half a yard/meter long, so it doesn't have to be hauled through the fabric too many times. Fabric wears away thread, no doubt about it. It may also be that your fabric is extra rough on the thread. ... show more

  • Excellent value - stock up!
Color: Black
Nice basic embroidery floss. What I received didn't have any info printed on it, just several bundles of plain black floss in a plastic bag. Another reviewer said they think it is more of a blue-black, but I have to disagree. The black floss I received seems like a dark true black to me. If I were in the middle of a project, I would not buy this to replace a different brand because it may not match perfectly, but that is true of any brand of floss. As this is about 1/3 of the cost of a certain leading brand, I think it is a very good deal and everyone should stock up. I do wish they had more colors available, but white black and red are common colors to need a lot of. ... show more

  • is it cotton? is it polyester?
Color: Black
comes in a vacuum pack which seems like a waste of plastic description says "cotton" (Engineered to Last:: Each cotton embroidery thread), but material composition says polyester (Material Composition Polyester) so that's confusing The thread feels very smooth and soft so I think it's polyester. Also, the six strands are VERY fine so if you were going to use this for embroidery it would not match the most widely used brand name floss. It will be great for making friendship bracelets, though, and that's what I'll be using it for this summer. ... show more

  • Embroidery Floss
Color: Black
Black embroidery floss. Quality seems to be as good as the branded floss you buy at the craft store but for a fraction of the price. Would highly recommend!

  • Excellent cheap floss for experimentation!
Color: Black
I've been wanting to do some cheap experimentation with embroidery to help learn faster - and at such a low price, this seemed like an excellent option to try it with. Compared to the DMC floss I've been working with, this is thinner and shinier. You get a solid bulk pile to work with. It's different enough from the black I was using that I'm not using it in ongoing work interchangeably, but I don't worry about waste when I'm playing around with the cheap stuff. ... show more

  • Works as expected
Color: White
Lovely smooth cotton thread with a little bit of a sheen to it. Strong and soft. Works well for my purposes. Whitest of white and lots of it.

  • So soft!
Color: Black
I typically pick up embroidery floss for crochet projects at hobby stores but I needed more black and took a chance on this. It’s so silky and soft! Way more than what I typically use. It made very clean lines for the crochet project accents and was easy to thread onto the needle and pull through the stitches. It even pulled back out cleanly without scuffing when I had to adjust something. There are a ton of bundles in the bag and the length is good. I was impressed with it and will be ordering more colors when needed. ... show more

  • Not a true deep black
Color: Black
For the price this is a good buy but be aware that it's more of a very dark blue than a true black. It's also polyester not cotton so if you're used to cotton it's a bit slicker. It still has 6 threads and there seems to be a good deal of yardage. It would be great for embroidery in a single color.
