Backpacking in the wilderness offers all kinds of challenges. One of them is the need to bury your waste. However, you need to be aware of how much your gear weighs. This is why I think this plastic trowel is great for backpacking. It's lightweight and rigid. It handled scraping away the pine needles and also did well at allowing me to dig down 6 inches without any more effort from other trowels I've employed before. I ordered this for repotting plants. It cut through roots easily and was easy and light-weight to handle. I haven't tried for digging in the ground.

The media could not be loaded. This lightweight trowel is pretty sturdy. But being made of plastic, it is only for loose soil or sand. Hard soil or rocky soil will wear it out pretty quickly. The seller description is pretty good, though I would not recommend it for general garden use. I did have the same (well, it at least looked the same) shovel previously for backpacking, and it served me well for a few trips before it broke. This hand shovel or trowel is just great for the light gardening we do. That consists primarily of repotting plants and weeding our small flower patch by our front door. It’s a nice size and the perfect size for those tasks and best of all for me, lightweight enough that I can use it for extended periods of time without wrist or hand strain. Fits my grip nicely. I’m not sure if I were doing some heavy duty work if it would be as durable as a standard metal hand shovel, but I have no need to find out and am happy with its performance. ... show more

My wife and I both garden and landscape around our house. We had only one garden trowel, so we often had to wait to share its use. The trowel we already had was made by a name brand (it's the trowel on the left in the photo). The less-expensive new trowel (it's on the right) looks a lot like the other one, except it's a little longer and pointier at its tip and it has a pronounced ribbed thumb rest (red). It has a measurement scale in both inches (4" max) and centimeters (10cm max) on the trowel blade; although, I'm not sure what I'll use this "value-added" feature for--maybe measure the depth of a hole. It's made from what I'd call a "plastic fiber composite" that is both strong and lightweight--just like the name brand. We've had the other for years and never broken it. We expect to get good service from this one. And no more sharing. ... show more

This is just a good little gardening trowel. I use it for weeding and sometimes the dirt is hard packed. This little guy does a good job. Metal tools rust so if I have a choice, I'm going with plastic. This is made of a very strong and rigid plastic. It has a nice deep pocket and there is a finger pad inset made of a softer material for comfort and non-slip grip. Great value and a great product. ... show more
