  • Okay book if you are into dated and old cookbooks
My wife and I are collectors of cookbooks and have been for years. No book is too obscure; or in some cases so bad, that it does not hold some interest at some level for us. The cookbook being reviewed here was first published in 1976 with reprints in 1977, 1978 and 1982. There are absolutely NO pictures in this book and the paper used is just slightly better than that found in newspapers..a bit thicker but pretty soft. Now this cookbook approached the subject a bit differently than man. It has broken down recipes as to appliances, i.e. what you can do with that new kitchen appliance you got for Christmas or on a whim. The book is broken down as follows: Food Processors Microwave Oven Crepe Pan Skillet WOK Crock Pot Pressure Cooker Toaster Oven It stresses the fact that many old recipes can be prepared using these ‘modern’ kitchen appliances. All aspect of cooking are addressed from appetizers through deserts. Now let me stress the fact that there are some very, very GOOD recipes in this book. The sad fact though is that any of the dishes featured here can almost instantly found, along with hundreds of variations, with a flick on the mouse on your computer or a slide of a finger across your screen....Sad but true. If you choose to add this one to your collection be sure to remember that technology has come a long, long way since this work was first published...hey, we are talking almost 40 years now. What held true then (technology wise) is not all that accurate today. Yes, the ‘makings’ of these dishes are still quite good but how you get to the final product has changed quite a lot. We have to smile when we look at our kitchen today. My wife grew up in a home that used a wood stove/oven to do the cooking with. Wow – have times changed. I must admit though that the food cooked on that old wood stove was just as good – if not better – that some of the stuff we turn out today...or am I just getting old and my memory is fading??? Now how to rate this book according to stars – a system I hate when it comes to books??? I am giving this a three because there is more and better information out there and because some of the material here is quite dated. If I were rating this book as an historical work, then I would have to give it four stars. It is not a book I would stumble out and purchase in order to learn to cook, but would buy it if I were interested in such things...which we are. This book comes from our private collection. ... show more
