  • The bad tuning knobs makes a nice appearing violin almost unusable
No matter what the price, if you can't make it play or stay in tune...it's not worth much to me. I like the appearance of this violin. I love the case. The case fits the violin well and has spaces built in for the bow and accessories. It's lined with a soft material for good protection. There are two backpacking straps on the back side. I have a problem with keeping the tuning knobs to stay put. The tightness of the string causes the knob to unwind...that's a deal breaker in my book. The knobs are held between two holes. The far knob must have a taper fit...that's how you are to keep it in tune. It's simply a pressure fit within a tapered hole. The bad tuning knobs makes a nice appearing violin almost unusable. ... show more

  • Nice sounding violin, a good value, but the bow has problems
It's a little difficult to assign a rating for something like this, it obviously can't be done on an absolute scale, I can't compare this to all violins. So my rating reflects my expectation of a sub-$100 violin. Let me also preface this by saying I don't play the violin myself (aside from having learned a few notes incidentally), but everyone else in my family does, some for more than 40 years. I play other musical instruments. Out of the box, the violin needs some setup before playing. The bridge has to be installed and it takes quite a while to do the initial tuning and you need someone who knows how to do that as well as something to check the tone against. And it requires further tuning as the strings stretch and settle. This is normal and expected. The bow being new, also requires a lot of rosin to be applied or it'll sound like the volume is turned down to 1. There is really an awful chemical smell when you open the case. I think it's coming from the varnish on the violin but it's permeated the case too so it's hard to tell for sure. I assume after airing them out for some time it will dissipate. The violin itself looks very nice. The wood glows and has nice grain. The finish is even and looks great. The bow is another matter, the hairs on the bow are uneven and the wood of the bow is so weak that it does not tighten properly. It can be made to work, but I was warned that it would not work for many uses. The frog does appear to be made of ebony but is a bit roughly finished. The silver winding looks like a piece of tape. The violin has a nice strong tone. It's bright and I can easily make the tone ring. We've had a few inexpensive violins here over the past few years and I'd say this one has the best sound of the bunch, when played with a good bow. It comes with some cheap rosin, a cheap shoulder rest, and an extra set of strings. The shoulder rest was a nice bonus, none of the other cheap violins we've had have come with one of those and everyone in the family uses one so it's nice that it's not a needed purchase for now. It does feel rather flimsy and fragile compared to the others we have, but it's functional for now. The case itself is pretty decent. It's lightweight but seems reasonably protective. The zipper works fine. Overall, this seems like a great value for what you get. I'm only deducting a star for the poor quality bow. If this is the limit of your budget, then it feels like a good choice. However, much like hand tools, you get what you pay for. If you're learning, you'll have a better experience on a higher quality instrument. If you're experienced, you can make this sing surprisingly well for the price. If you're like me and just want to fool around, maybe play something with your youngest child who has just started learning, then I think it's fine. ... show more
