Description

Frustrated by a day full of teachers and classmates mispronouncing her beautiful name, a little girl tells her mother she never wants to come back to school. In response, the girl's mother teaches her about the musicality of African, Asian, Black-American, Latinx, and Middle Eastern names on their lyrical walk home through the city. Empowered by this newfound understanding, the young girl is ready to return the next day to share her knowledge with her class. Your Name is a Song is a celebration to remind all of us about the beauty, history, and magic behind names. Your Name is a Song includes back matter perfect for parents, educators, caregivers, and young readers who want to learn more about the names featured in the story. The "Glossary of Names" lists each name’s meaning, origin, and pronunciation. Additionally, readers can use a listed link to access an online video of the author pronouncing all the names in the book. Read more

  • Great book for the music classroom
Format: Hardcover
Beautiful illustrations and message in the book. I use it in my elementary music classroom and then we use chrome music lab to write our names as a song. Perfect way to start the school year.

  • Love this book
Format: Hardcover
Such a lovely read (and song lol). My kids and I love reading/singing along and then singing their own names for the rest of the day. Beautiful work. We even bought a copy to give to a friend.

  • LOVE
Format: Hardcover
I love every word of this book. I love how the author intentionally chose the names, I love the story, the illustrations, the feeling I was left with... Ive always loved names, they are a huge part of who we are, and now I find a little more magic and meaning behind each new name I encounter. I can’t wait to share this with my class. ... show more

  • Magical and breathtaking book
Format: Hardcover
Between the poetic writing and the breathtaking art, this book is one of our favorite books of all time. My children love hearing it, and have enjoyed learning how to pronounce some new-to-them name along with the author (there's a link listed in the back of the book that takes you to a video of her pronouncing each of the beautiful names in the book). A MUST HAVE for all families, teachers, and caregivers! ... show more

  • A very cute book with a very important message
Format: Kindle
This is a great book for kids who have names other people struggle (or just don't even try) with, to increase their confidence to stand up for their names and teach others how to say it properly. This is also good for kids who have common names, to teach them that just because another person's name sounds different than what they're used to hearing, it's still a beautiful name and you should say it correctly. Honestly, I know a few adults who could use this book! I especially love that the author included a glossary of the names mentioned in the book, including their origins and meanings. All the names featured are so beautiful, it's lovely to have further education on them. ... show more

  • Great for my Music classroom!
Format: Hardcover
I used this book in my Music classroom (grades 2-7) as part of a composition unit. We loved the book, the idea of our names coming from somewhere, having different feelings, having rhythm and melody. My students represent so many languages and cultures. This book honors each and every on of us. Great story, beautiful illustrations. ... show more
