What a shame. I have "The original" that I bought several years ago and it works great. I sleep in two locations so I figured I would buy another so I did not have to move my machine every time. I read the reviews and many were poor for the new "original" model. I just thought maybe the people were picky because I love the first machine. Well I was wrong. The quality is not as good and the fan makes noises so it is not consistent which is not the best for sleep. If I found the REAL original I would buy that again, but I will tell you folks, they went cheap and must have had this made elsewhere or got a deal on parts that saved them money. I bought one 4 years ago and it's still working great. My kids wanted one so I bought on Nov 2018. It started to rattle pretty bad and sound annoying. My old one still runs and sounds like it did day one not sure what they did different or if it's a QC issue. I'm going to find out how the 1 year warranty it's supposed to have will go. ... show more

I run this for about 12 hours a day. Worked well out of the box, no motor problems, no vibrating. It is NOT that loud. I have it right next to my head and while the sound is obviously soothing and masking I can still hear my husband laugh in the living room. It works well for me, but it wont completely cover dogs barking or people talking loudly. It does make those sounds softer though. I would probably need another on my dresser at the end of my room and one on his side to really have a complete sound covering affect. I can hear my toilet running (attached right next to our room, maybe like 15 feet away) while this is on the highest settings right next to my head. So it's okay. Is it worth $50? I dunno but I really needing something once our air purifier kicked the bucket (now THAT is a nice loud sound). So I was desperate. This does the job of keeping me from waking up to our cats jingle bell collars or any playing they do at nigh. It doesn't drown out people opening sticky doors, dogs outside, loud laughing or talking from a room away. The sound itself is a nice soothing cover up, like a high fan. I really wish it was louder though. The quieter settings are useless I can't imagine anyone using it not at full blast. If I wasn't desperate for a white noise machine I think I would have returned this and tried other options. ... show more

We’ve been using this model of white noise machine since 2014 with two kids who continue to use them. It’s worked quite well, several hours every single day for years without fail. After almost seven years, our first one finally died out, which is understandable after that much use. So we just bought two more. And they’re just as good. A couple of observations that are really just minor gripes … Wish there was at least one more volume level louder. I really like the analog nature of the noise machine (seems more soothing?), but it limits the volume to hi and low only. Digital noise machines have the advantage of much more variable volume. Having a third volume option would really help during fireworks, thunderstorms, etc. Wish I could officially open the device to clean the internal fan and restore its balance. Wish every unit came with a travel case and it wasn’t an extra cost. It’s not like the kids travel without a noise machine. Lastly, the big thing that bugged me on the new units was that the gray color has a white cord. Normally it’s not a big deal. But the gray is VERY light … like almost white, but not quite. And the white cord just makes it look like someone didn’t put the extra effort in to color match the cord and body colors. This sort of thing usually doesn’t bug me, but if you saw it, I bet the reaction would be similar. Almost makes me wish I spent the extra 10 bucks on the white version. Almost. We've used our old Dohm Noise Machine every night for many years, and it's never failed us. It's heavy because it is so robustly made, and I'm sure that this is a big part of why it works so well, for so long. The sound is produced by a fan moving air through baffles, so the sound is very consistent, compared to digital noisemakers. We purchased a second Dohm machine when our grandson started staying overnight with us, and it is identical in design and materials to our first, and works just as well. We have liked this machine so well that we've hauled it in our luggage all over the world (which also requires lugging a transformer for countries with 220 Amp service. So, we decided to try a Dohm digital noisemaker, which is a fraction of the weight. It also works really well. It's battery lasts about 2 nights before a recharge is needed. It's downside is that the noise is on a loop, so it not as consistent. So, we love now our heavy Dohm at home and the light digital version while traveling. Great products. When I was in the Navy, I only needed to sleep for 5 hours a deep because of how deep the sleep was. A big part of that was the low hum of the ship's engines. This little guy (and it is small) does a GREAT job of replicating that experience and helps me stay asleep longer. If I had one complaint, its that I would like just a little more adjustment to drop the octave range to a lower tone. This product is an old school technology white noise generator. Before using this, we were using a digital app that allowed you to pick any number of soothing sounds. But, the problem with all of them is that it’s really hard to find one that works. So the Marpac Dohm uses an actual fan with baffles that you can adjust, and a two speed switch that allows softer or louder noise. We find it quickly drowns out all ambient noise and allows far fewer interruptions to our sleep. We recently took it on the road for a two week driving trip with multiple hotel stays. Don’t have to tell you how noisy a hotel is. The machine was worth it’s weight in gold for drowning out all of that noise. Love it! Sometimes old school is the best school! ... show more
