This would be a little messy for a young child to put together. But I assembled it before giving it to my 3-year-old niece and she loved it. The detail painting on the unicorns is really nice, considering how small they are (it's not sloppy). I wish they had cut a small opening in either the plastic dome, or the wooden base, so the cord to the lights wasn't crushed when you put the dome on. I carefully chiseled out a little notch at the bottom edge of the dome & that worked. It also would have been nice if the battery case had been attached to the bottom of the light itself, rather than dangling by the cord, since this is designed for kids, and young kids love to carry things around. As another reviewer noted, the package makes it look cheap, like a dollar-store item, which makes it less giftable. I paid $23 and I feel like it was a decent value. It's very cute with the lights on, and with an older child, you'd get the added value of the fun of them being able to "craft" it. Battery case, containing 2 AA batteries, is under the base, in the "finished item" photo, so you can see how big it is. ... show more
