These have been great for a lot of jobs! I've actually used them to flatten sheet metal so it's nice and smooth vs hammer and hand pressing it. I've used them to stretch fabric but also grab onto pieces of slippery cord, plastic and other materials. I've used these to help shape various types of sheet metal and steel mesh. While I have some big upholstery jobs these were bought specifically for, I've yet to get to those but still managed to use these a couple dozen times on a variety of jobs.

Mine didn't come in retail pkg, nor did it have the spring. It was cheap. I don't really like using it, it's bulky and seems to get in the way. Perhaps I needed more extra canvas to stretch or something. It probably worked enough in the end , the canvas stretched and stapled.

My only complaint is the rubber on the handles does not stay in place and has to be glued

This make stretching canvas as whole lot easier. I stretched out a larger canvas with this tool and it came out even ( just a really nice, quality canvas) As we know art stuff is costly, so if you want to make your own canvases this will help.
