  • Nice design, poor quality control
Very pretty piece. Was hoping sound would get better after I got some hours on it, but I'll never know since it started having issues after just a few hours. The first issue I noticed was that there was an imbalance in the volume control(one side plays ever so slightly louder than the other). I still liked the preamp well enough that I was going to just do an exchange, but then I started getting random buzzing and popping in the sound. Went back to my other tube preamp($300ish from China) and I was hard not to notice that the $300 actually sounded better than this. Not worth exchanging. Returned. ... show more

  • Interesting design that really sings (especially after upgrading the valves)
As of today, December 1 (2024) I'm now three full years in with daily use of this preamp and all remains well with no issues whatsoever. I’ve paired the Yaqin preamp with a Crown XLS2002 (solid state) power amp (650 hard driving watts @ 4 ohms). I built the speakers using SBA drivers (12” woofer SB34NRX75-6, 5” mid Satori MW13P, SB29RDNC-C000-4 Ring Dome Tweeter - 200 Hz (LR4) and 3,000 Hz (also LR4) 3-way crossover points. I’m now running Philips e80cc valves in the two 12au7 positions and the sound has been nothing short of magical. E80cc valves draw approximately 50% more current than 12au7s and they also have a somewhat greater mu - specifically 29 as opposed to 17 via the 12au7s. Still, all is fine with the (ever cool running) Yaqin transformers. Note: I initially paired the Yaqin preamp with a variety of valve based power amps (most self-made, low power SE designs, a few higher powered commercial productions ). I’ve since purchased a Topping Pre90 solid state preamp for use with the tube amps, preferring it’s high SINAD and Dynamic Range (in combination with its ultra low noise and THD) over the warmth and smoothness of the Yaqin. Following is my original review for this Yaqin made preamp. If you’re just starting out with valves, know that the tubes that come with this preamp are - in my very much subjective opinion - of average quality. That’s just how it goes with all these relatively inexpensive, valve based audio electronics that Amazon sells. Given the low wholesale cost, how else are the manufacturers going to turn a decent profit but by skimping on the quality (hence cost) of the tubes? I upgraded the valves as follows. Rare, red tipped (“Medical Grade”) Amperex 12ax7s with matching 12au7 Bugle Boys. I had originally rolled in Sylvania 7025s and French made Mazda 12au7s, but I needed those elsewhere in a different amp. Mullard (early '60s, 4 hole) made in England 5ar4 rectifier. I tossed the new, (in my experience altogether unreliable) Russian made one that came with the amp first thing. I kept the EL84 - actually a fine quality/NOS 6p14p - as its function here is limited to buffering. Note. I know my way around electronics but have yet to take much more than a cursory look at the circuit in its entirety. Plainly though, here the EL84 is functioning as a cathode follower. (Output tubes offer little value as voltage amplifiers.) A bit of an unusual choice, but when done properly - as it appears to have been here - it can work well. Features (not noted in the item description): Microprocessor soft start delay Output via a motorized volume control returns to the last used setting upon start up No issues when using Philips E80CC valves in place of the 12au7s Very cool running All around solid build quality with excellent cosmetics In sum, this is a well made, sweet sounding preamplifier - especially (again, in my opinion) after you’ve upgraded the tubes. I wanted to add: I also own a Schiit Freya (version 1) and this preamp is easily its equal, if not altogether better. In fact, I very much prefer the sound of this Yaqin over that of the Schiit. For starters, the output via the Yaqin is more linear and better balanced compared to that of the (very much mid-range heavy) Freya. The Freya, that is the first generation, is also notoriously noisy with certain tubes. While yes, the Freya does include both a passive and solid state output option, why have tubes at all if you’re not going to use them? In addition, unlike with the Freya, the remote on the Yaqin not only works, but works very well. Lastly, the Yaqin B-2T responds so very much better than the Schiit when rolling tubes - and runs significantly cooler, too. Prior to acquiring this Yaqin preamp, I had purchased a second Freya - the new plus (“Freya+”) version. Unfortunately, that preamp had a bad volume control, so I returned it. Luckily the defect occurred well within the 15 day return window, so I was refunded (less shipping - both ways, of course). Schiit did try to charge their notorious 5% “restocking fee”, but after an email reasoning why I shouldn’t be held financially responsible for the return when the product was defective, they refunded that. One last note. Admittedly, I’ve rolled in some pricy, rather rare vintage tubes. I’m fortunate in that I first became interested in valve based electronics when I was barely in my teens. (I’m just shy of 55 years old.) Back then tubes (much like vinyl records some years later) were regarded as more or less relics from a not so distant past. Luckily for me, high quality NOS tubes were still not only readily available, they were relatively inexpensive too. (If only I had been smart enough to stock up on certain gold pin Telefunkens! Now, those are pricey tubes!) Fast forward to 2022. You needn’t spend hundreds of dollars on quality vintage tubes. For example, a pair of matched and balanced (*) genuine NOS clear top RCA12au7s will set you back maybe $50.00 or $60.00 via eBay. Sylvania 12au7s are also high quality, still readily available - and affordable, too. Vintage 12ax7s tend to be pricier, though I recently saw a quad of ANOS (Almost New Old Stock) Raytheon black plates (USA made, premium tubes from the early 1960s) sell on an eBay auction for $90.00. (*) For those altogether new to tubes, both 12ax7 and 12au7 valves are, essentially, two tubes in one. Specifically, they are what is called twin triodes. I always purchase my vintage tubes from reputable sellers and dealers that have the ability to test and match both triodes in each tube via calibrated tube testing equipment. A matched and balanced tube will show similar results, usually with no greater than 10% difference between the two sections (or each triode). When purchasing via eBay, I do feel it’s best that nthe seller not only accepts returns but also includes in the description the actual test results for both triodes (per individual tube). ... show more

  • Great deal for your money
The Preamp is nicely made, does not look cheap. Is built solid. Tubes are upgraded already. The bass and highs are very crisp. What a difference from my previous preamp.
