  • Many pros, few cons. Get the 2.0 update!
Color: Orange
The 2.0 firmware update really adds a lot of possibilites for more complex arrangements. Seriously: update the firmware. There is definitely a learning curve to adjust to as you are getting a feel for the workflow. Lots of button combos to learn. Downloading or accessing the full manual from the yamaha site is highly recommended, as is using the companion app which is available for windows, mac, ios and android. While you absolutely can get away with not using the app, why hamstring yourself? The app has a mode wherein it will display a guide in response to a control surface that has been touched which helps a bunch when youre learning the workflow. You can also use the app to download additional sound packs, either as single sounds or the whole pack. And there is tons of space too, so go for it. Even without downloading any additional sound packs there are tons of included sounds. An almost daunting amount of sounds actually, particularly without using the app. The on-board speaker is there. Wouldnt recommend using it though. Sound quality through the headphone jack is great. The rechargable battery is a nice feature and will power a smallish usb midi controller for a decent amount of time. Speaking of midi, you will need the included midi cable to use the 3.5mm midi port, it's not TRS. There is a dedicated dx track. The chord mode is nice feature if you are without an external controller. The unit feels cheap, perhaps because of the plastic used. It keeps the unit light i guess? This makes the unit feel like a toy, which it totally isnt so this aspect is unfortunate. The sequencer and synth keys are extremely clacky. HOWEVER youre never going to be close mic-ing the tiny speaker (even in a live setting) so it's a non-issue. They work well for sequencing and do the job if you are without a usb midi controller for the synth section. For an example of similar feel and clackiness it's like a sonicware liven unit (like the mega synthesis). The seqtrak is very portable, ideal for taking with you for whenever inspiration strikes. I have not messed with the onboard sampler. I have a koii for use as a sampler and will probably never use this feature but I have heard from various youtube videos that the sampler is limited. It would have been nice to have a dedicated sync port for ease of use with other gear. In regards to price? It packs a lot of punch for its price-point. The price feels fair for what you get. Are there cheaper grooveboxes? A few maybe however the majority are more expensive. You can do so much with a seqtrak, far more than i can lay out here. Overall, im very happy with my purchase and would do so again, particularly with the 2.0 update. ... show more

  • Much better after the last software update!
Color: Orange
What an odd thing. First thing's first, the interface is bonkers. There's no screen, the top is a bunch of knobs, a couple of sliders, and 2 rows of sequence triggers. Most of the function buttons are on all 4 sides of the device. The display are a bunch of 80s style lighted words. Are you still reading? If you can stomach learning the weirdest interface since the FB-01, you get treated to a rompler synth engine and a decent fm synth, so the device is kind of like a DX7 and an old ModX with a sequencer. Sequences are 128 steps max, with 3 per "scene," which you can string together in the obligatory sound mode. Originally the device had 7 drum tracks and 3 sunth tracks, but since the 2.0 update, you can turn the single drum tracks into a drum kit track or a synth track, which makes it infinitely more useful. You'll want to use an external midi controller for anything serious; the built in keys aren't touch sensitive and are pretty bad. A lot of features can only be accessed via the app (and a lot more features are way easier to handle with it). If you're looking for an OP1 killer, this ain't it. But since the price has come down to $200-$250, there's definitely a lot of music to be made, if you can get past the UI. ... show more

  • Enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime device. Enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime device.
Color: Black
I will tell you why this is an incredible device. It has filled every expectation which is rare [I am particular!] Most digital-based sequencers+synths have displays that are required. You cannot get the feel of the instrument. Rather on digital devices you have to glue your eyes to a screen to do anything. It is annoying. Not here. If you enjoy hands-on equipment this is the instrument of the decade, in my opinion. This device is tactile. You navigate it by feeling your way around, selecting durations, time, repeats, instrumentation, etc. If you get lost, you bring up the app and learn what you need to know so you don't need to bring the app up again. It is easy to use imho. I spent two hours on three different days and learned the basics. I am not a pro musician I am strictly amateur, tho' I have used a few digital and analog synths in the past. Really what you need to operate this genius-level device is a little discipline and concentration for a few hours. That's it. Anyone who hasn't mastered the basics just hasn't spent any time with it. For the first day, I paired my Seqtrak with an Android. I tried an iPad and laptop computer, but they were too big. The app is designed to match the Seqtrak itself and fit nicely on a phone. So you don't need to carry a lot around. Just the Seqtrak and the phone for when you totally blank on where something is. The more you use the device, the less you use the app. I made several nice beat-tracks each day. They fit nicely in the higher project slots. Digitized audio works great there are some videos about how to make efficient use of your samples. Watch them. The quality is good for the money of course. Sound quality is excellent. Functionality can't be surpassed at this pricepoint certainly! It is a lot of fun. Honestly I haven't had so much fun with a synth in years. Enjoy this device.... only one such issue happens a generation. This is it. Buy it, use it or miss out. Highly recommended. I would give the Seqtrak six stars if I could. ... show more

  • So fun to play!
Color: Black
Awesome little groove box! I recommend spending a few minutes reading through the manual before each session until you learn all the features. I did this instead of watching videos online and was able to make a music I enjoy vs copying someone else’s style and I got to learn all the features and I love it! The synth engine is excellent for a standalone unit in this price range. The hardware is not very durable for a musical instrument so avoid hitting the buttons hard and don’t hand it to your toddler to play with. I did this and now one of the synth buttons lost sensitivity. The midi cable that it comes with makes it possible to use with most keyboards. It even works with my 2010 casio Privia! The usb midi works with a modern midi controller but not an archaic keyboard like mine. It should ship with a midi adapter and be sure to send it back if it doesn’t. It’s not proprietary but it’s only manufactured and used by Yamaha. You can order a replacement adapter with the part number: VFD34200 I bought it new and received a returned unit that didn’t have any peripherals, but it did have the RMA slip from the previous owner. ... show more

  • Easy music creation. Fun to play. Many ways to use it.
Color: Orange
Fun to play. Easy to make music. It is good to read instructions and update to 2.0. In my case easily connects via USB midi to a keyboard and can be controlled using the keyboard knobs and keys. Becomes Yamaha DX synthesizer. :) You can connect it to a phone or iPad via cable or Bluetooth.

  • Returned in less than 5 min after opening
Color: Orange
Dude, for a $400 product, the build quality is atrocious! I don't want to complain about the plastic feel, but one of the synth keys requires much more pressure than others to trigger. All my excitement and the desire to learn about this thing is gone.

  • Powerful device very fun
Color: Orange
I am really enjoying learning to use this. It's a lot of fun. I carry it with me most days in a briefcase. It feels a little cheap, but it does a lot. The built in speaker is sub-par but when you play it in a DAW or plug headphones in, the quality improves greatly. I only wish I could find an affordable hard carrying case that was cushioned and specifically designed for it ... show more
