  • Great sound!
Style: 5.1 Receiver
This unit is a replacement for the same unit I purchased 9 years ago. The first one worked very well and had great sound. I was kind of surprised it only lasted nine years but that's pretty good and definitely got my moneys worth out of it! This new one is great and has really good sound and function. The connection ports on the back are slightly different, only 4 HDMI ports instead of 6 like the old one but plenty enough for my setup. This is a great receiver with great sound and ease of setup. If you want to customize the settings there are plenty of functions that you can fully customize. Like I said this is my second one of these units and I am very happy with it and would recommend it to anyone who wants great surround sound for their entertainment center. You won't be disappointed! ... show more

  • good sound, deep bass and powerful output to the speakers
Style: 5.1 Receiver
Everything is great, except the YPAO microphone and Quick Start Guide is missing in the box (probably due to this is used unit). It is not a big deal because I did get the manual from Internet. I could not make my DVD player and VCR work with this unit via RCA ports. I have tried AV2 and AV3 but only sound came out, not video. Will keep testing to see why (hopefully these RCA ports are not defective due to used unit) ... show more

  • Very nice unit for the money
Style: 5.1 Receiver
Like this one, cost a bit more but beat out the one I purchased that lets just say was not good. I replaced my 7 channel with this one mainly because of cost. It was easy to setup, looks great, and features great audio and video quality., The remote came with batteries and was ready to use. I have not used the Bluetooth yet, but plan to in the future for wireless connectivity. The screen is bright and easy to see so that works great too. ... show more

  • Acts strangely when TV turned off
Style: 5.1 Receiver
Easy to install and works as I expect with one exception. When I turn off the television to have only sound from the receiver, the sound stops for about 10 seconds, every five minutes for almost an hour! I’ve looked up this kind of activity and can’t find a reason anywhere. Otherwise, I would give it five stars. ... show more

Style: 5.1 Receiver
70 YEARS! Best ever , not only for the money, but it actually maintains quality when you ,um, accidentally turn up to listen to favorite tunes. I am so very happy I didn't get to, once again, going to All the high dollar (trash) items. Just take it from a guy who almost Never writes these reviews. Well, Yamaha deserves accolades of praise. 70 years old and finally a going home present. ... show more

  • Reluctant upgrade turned into amazement.
Style: 5.1 Receiver
My old digital 5.1 system has been stored for about 15 years, and I recently acquired a house with a perfect basement room for a home theater. Dusted, cleaned, tested, and repaired my components over months, and got it all working like new again. Speakers are all BIC Venturi, including a 12-inch subwoofer with its own separate 100-watt solid state amp that cost me $500 back in the 1990's. Happily found out my KLH digital 5.1 receiver still worked great even though it's probably over 20 years old and doesn't do HDMI, but then I soon discovered it also wouldn't decode today's surround signals. Over time I tried many things like an HDMI audio extractor, but the only surround sound I could get was through broadcast channels using my TV's optical output. So, my 5.1 receiver works great, but I'm forced to seek a modern replacement anyway. Of course I looked at Denon, Sony, Onkyo, Pioneer, and even Marantz; all for well over $300, and all have many reviews complaining about failure and lack of support. It seems that electronics aren't made like they used to be, but I had no choice in going way over my budget to buy a possibly risky component. After months of watching deals come and go on Amazon, along with the constantly rising prices, I couldn't help noticing the Yamaha RX-V385. It's been out a few years with over 2300 reviews that are slightly more positive than all the rest. 5.1, not 7.2 or 9.2.2 or whatever, perfect for my needs. Then I noticed it was available with monthly payments. Sold! I also added a 3-year warranty just in case. Woah, surround sound from everything! PC, Roku Ultra w/Plex Media, Amazon Video, PlutoTV, Roku Channel, you name it. Apparently I had all of the different settings right all along, but the old KLH receiver didn't know what to do with them. The Yamaha RX-V385 is perfect paired with a 100-inch picture from my Epson EF11 laser projector and all of my BIC speakers. I'm blown away with this setup every time I fire it up, and can't wait to start showing it off. Haven't tried bluetooth, not sure if I ever will. Music is played through my PC and Win Media Player, or my cellphone through the front auxiliary jack. Pass-through is great, in fact you can still change video sources through it without it being turned on. Hopefully I'll get many years of pleasure out of this receiver before the surround signals are outdated again. *This was NOT part of a promotion.* ... show more

  • MUST connect to eARC port!
Style: 5.1 Receiver
I know this is a cliche but this thing deserves ZERO stars. The specs clearly indicate it can be used with a TV that only has an optical output. However, that's a lie. Because if no HDMI is connected from a TV to the eARC port on the back of the receiver, when you press either SETUP or OPTION on the remote. the device displays "NOT AVAILABLE"... so you're completely dead in the water, unable to proceed with any form of setup. This renders the dang thing unusable. Also, every time you toggle from one input to another, it always turns on some unwanted echo-filled sound processing and you have to hit the STRAIGHT button on the remote to get it back to how you had it before. EVEN WHEN YOU RETURN TO THE PREVIOUS INPUT. This is insane and very annoying. Also the manual (if you can even manage to figure out how to download it) is practically worthless as written. There are no setup procedures to follow from start to finish. Everything just defers to some other part of the manual - so you just keep getting batted around like a tennis ball from one unhelpful page to another. But sadly that's not really noteworthy in today's electronics world. ... show more
