  • My Favorite Instrument Ever!
PROS The sound quality is fantastic. Just going straight into a Blackstar Fly 3 amp sounds pretty much like an acoustic violin. With clean settings from a digital sound effects box, and a little reverb it sounds like a terrific acoustic instrument. The look is unique, both modern and sleek. High quality of build. Seems sturdy and well finished. I picked the natural finish for the YEV 105. Different woods are used for the violin body, which complement each other in a pleasing way. It is not shiny but has a smooth matte finish. The overall impression is beautiful and classy without being tacky. I like that the strings are pretty decent as well. E, A, D and G strings are D'Addario Zyex which are a mid level set with high ratings, and the C string is a Helicore which is a highly rated steel core string. That deep resonant C string booms! The tuning setup come with standard pegs and fine tuners for all 5 strings. Although I'm used to a fine tuner for only the E string, having additional fine tuners has been an added convenience, especially when setting up new strings. For example, when I tightened the E string for the first time, the peg kept slipping. So I got it to within range and then tightened the fine tuner all the way up. Then in a few hours the string was properly stretched out, and the peg could hold without slipping. I normally have to have to do just minimal fine tuning each practice session, no different than any other standard violin. CONS The body of the instrument is formed with a thin strong piece of shaped wood that happens to have a very narrow cross-section. I tried using a Kun-type shoulder rest, but it would consistently fall off at inopportune moments because the rubber feet just couldn't get a grip no matter what adjustments I tried to make. I ended up switching to a basic Everest shoulder rest, which helped a lot. The foot design seemed to fit the narrowness of the violin body better. I also added a thin strip of cork tape to the underside of the violin body just where the shoulder rest feet are, and that really seemed to help give the shoulder rest a lot of stability. Problem solved! There is no sound if I plug headphones directly into the violin. This is a non-issue for me because I normally practice at a low volume from a Blackstar Fly 3 Amp. If I want to use headphones, I can plug them into a Mooer Sound Effects box without issues. No case. I bought a rectangular case from a China based supplier for cheap. Would have appreciated a case. No bow. I bought a Fiddlerman Carbon bow, and later a Codabow SX. Both great in their own ways. Probably better to buy your own bow of choice. No accessories like rosin, cleaning cloth, shoulder rest, etc. I bought my own things like Jade Rosin, Everest shoulder rest, and a chamois-like cleaning cloth. No issues, it's probably better to buy your own quality accessories anyways. OVERALL I love this violin so much. I've owned and played many violins for over 55 years and appreciated them all. But this one is special. I can say this is my favorite out of them all. It allows me to make beautiful music, and the experience gives me great happiness:) ... show more

  • Very nice instrument.
The media could not be loaded. We tried another cheaper (about 1/4 the cost of this) violin off of Amazon, but it had a flimsy adapter port, doesnt send the sound well to the speaker, and in general just not good. I broke down and bought this, though I still dont like the price I paid for this. However, grand scheme of things, this is worth the price. Easy to handle for my son, looks sleek, above all, sounds really nice. We connect this to a Bose S1 Pro and it is performance-ready. This is made to last, picks up every nuance from the string (bow is also from Amazon, FiddlerMan). Also, my son used to complain of the sound from his acoustic violin to be "too loud" possibly due to the proximity to the left ear and this removes that concern. He still practices on the acoustic at this classes and other practice sessions. Tune credit on the video: Devi SriPrasad, from the sound track of Iddarammayilatho. ... show more

  • Beautiful violin! Great purchasing experience!
This Yamaha YEV 105 is absolutely beautiful! Buying it from the ElectricViolinShop through Amazon was a great experience. We even received a hand written note from Susie at EVS. What a nice surprise! It was delivered right on time, and had been very carefully packed for shipping so it arrived in perfect condition. It was professionally set up and ready to play right out of the box. I've enjoyed playing it every day since it arrived. This violin is so beautiful, it looks like a piece of art! The instrument has lovely tone, and is a joy to play. It is an absolutely amazing value for the price, and I couldn't be happier!! ... show more

  • Great product, less than ideal customer support
I was very excited to get this violin, which shipped quickly enough to DC. It was well packaged and already set up and certified by the seller. From the little I was able to test it before sending it back (see below), it had a rich sound, good volume for lacking a resonating body, and seemed incredibly well crafted. However, shipping a fragile violin always is a risk and unfortunately I received my product with a broken string and loose tuning peg. After Amazon first put me in contact with Yamaha for support (who were amazing!), I ended up contacting the seller on Amazon to find out options for a fix. This is where things were somewhat frustrating. While customer support was pretty responsive, instructing me to ship back my violin for them to send a completely new replacement, I kept getting conflicting information. Despite informing me that returns are usually processed within two days and a replacement would automatically be sent out, my return (which had been sent by UPS and signed for) appears to have sat for just over a week. When I contacted support, I was told to just wait for the returns team to process it — no big deal. However, once my return finally processed and Amazon processed a refund to my card, I was told that no replacement would be coming — if I wanted a new violin, I’d have to place the order again. This is frustrating as it has now been more than 3 weeks since I first ordered this violin, and now I’m looking at another potential week of waiting — if I had known to reorder while my return was processing, I’d be playing the violin as I type this! This is obviously not the end of the world, but it was not encouraging to hear that no replacement was guaranteed as I’ve been watching the stock of this product available shrink from 5 down to 2. Having placed my new order again today, it seems like I’m getting it by the skin of my teeth. Better communication by customer support would have made this a much smoother experience — if it were possible, I’d say it’s the only thing that made this a 4.5 instead of 5 star purchase. ... show more

  • Nice electric violin/viola
There is a learning curve with this 5 string violin/viola if you are accustomed to a typical 4 string instrument. It produces a faint sound when not plugged in so that you can practice without disturbing the neighbors. I use it with a Kustom amplifier and it sounds great.
