  • Worth it if you like long immersive lore heavy JRPG’s!
Don’t be put off by some of the top bad reviews on here. Those who play the game and think combat is completely automatic do not really understand the game’s combat mechanics. This is my first Xenoblade game and at first it does seem like it’s all automatic if you’ve never played Xenoblade…but that’s really not the case once you play for awhile and truly understand how everything works. I won’t get into specifics, but it’s a really fun unique system. Leveling up classes, utilizing hero characters, optimizing stats for your party members, interlinking, fusion combos, and chain attacks turn into a really satisfying game loop. Cut scenes are quite long, but depending on how you play the game; it could be hours before you get to one due to time spent exploring (especially if you’re a map completionist like me). Another reviewer mentioned an abundance of unnecessary items, which also just isn’t the case. There are a lot of items to be found while exploring, but they are necessary for completing quests, making gems which are actually important for the battle system, and building relationships with colonies (which in turn help unlock quests). Also, the game is quite long and very story/lore heavy. Some might benefit from playing XC1 and 2 before playing 3, but it’s not essential. I would even argue that 3 is a great entry point as it makes the world feel a bit more mysterious for a new player. After this, I do plan on playing the previous installments, but it’s a bit of a time commitment. XC3 can take about a hundred hours and up to many more to fully complete. That said, this really is a beautiful game with interesting lore, great characters, and overarching themes of mortality. It is a Nintendo Switch game, but be aware that it’s not really a kids game. It does have a lot of adult language and some heavy subjects. Some parents might be fine with this, but it’s worth mentioning for those that aren’t. Also, at first the English voice acting can be a bit jarring, but absolutely stick with it. The voice acting was done by the same studio that worked on Elden Ring and features some crossover talent. I was on the fence at first, but this game honestly has some of the best voice acting I’ve ever experienced in a JRPG. Another standout is actually the music. It has one of the best and most expansive soundtracks I’ve heard in awhile for this type of game. It’s very cinematic and driven by emotional themes of the game as the story progresses. Overall, this game has really surprised me for a Nintendo exclusive. It’s really up there with some of the best on the Switch including BOTW and Fire Emblem Three Houses. Also, fun fact, but Monolith Soft (the studio behind the game) also put some work into BOTW and Splatoon 3! ... show more
