  • Decent for light/medium duty, with some caveats
I think it's probably fair to say that, overall, this is a "decent" vise for light to medium duty work, depending on personal use cases. For small scale woodworking, electronics/tinkering, stuck threading on failed 3D print prototypes (*raises hand*), jewelry work, or things as random as loosening a household plumbing fitting, this may be the only vise you'll ever need. I have no real way of measuring clamping strength, so this is purely anecdotal on my part, but using the bare metal jaws, I tried clamping down on an old brass 3D printer nozzle. It's just under 1/4" (6mm) thick with a 1/16" (1.8mm) hole down the center. The jaws marred the brass but I couldn't apply enough force to crush the nozzle. Maybe that observation is useful, and maybe not. For my uses as a general tinkerer, I'm pretty sure this vise will be able to handle whatever I toss at it. 1 That being said, it isn't perfect... - I had to apply grease to the screws and tighten the nut on the rotation lock before it was even usable, which was annoying. - The mounting clamp only opens to 1 5/8" (41mm). So, sure, it'll clamp down onto the 1 1/2" side of a 2x4, but it won't clamp down on a tabletop plus a 2x4, so the types of workbenches this vise can be installed on is limited. Also, there is no padding on the mounting clamp, so unless you use your own, it'll mar any wooden/soft surface you clamp it to. - The magnetic jaw pads are a really nice feature, but if you try to clamp on the edge of the pad, the pads will slide around and it won't clamp well. Whatever you're clamping has to be large/long enough to sit down into the jaws a good half inch to ensure a solid grip. - With the bare jaws, the maximum vise opening (throat?) is 2 1/2" (63mm). With the pads applied, that opening is reduced to 1 5/8" (41mm), which is a... significant reduction. I've never owned a small vise like this before, so I don't know how common these nitpicks of mine are, but they're noteworthy enough to me that I can't give this vise top marks despite being overall satisfied with it. ... show more

  • Misleading specs
I have to say I am really disappointed in Workpro on this one. I have a set of their quick clamps and those are totally amazing and their other tools have been great but this thing is a total miss. I have a cheap Chinese model (that you can find tons of copies of on Amazon) and it actually works a bit better than this. I saw from the pictures that the bench clamp throat was pretty small but that wasn't a huge issue for my application on a 3/4 benchtop. What is a big issue is that the listing claims a 2.5 throat to fit on a 2x4 built table and it most certainly is not that. My Chinese one has kind of an overly large throat somewhere around 4 inches so you can actually clamp onto a 2x4 on side with a topper. One star is off for the misleading or downright lying on the article. Second star off is because the rotation lock is totally garbage. First time trying to use it it just spun all the way around doing nothing and then it popped out. Luckily the center is open to view while the jaws are open so I could see what the issue was. The mechanism seems to be designed so that the odd eccentric bit on the shaft torques against the square nut inside and locks against the bottom plate. Not sure if mine is missing a part or if this is just a really bad design because the nut only works when jammed up against one side and nothing in the vice holds the piece in place. When it is allowed to float it finds the dead spot and the lever can spin all the way around with no locking. In the third image you can see how I fixed it by jamming a small wood wedge in to hold the nut against one side and now it actually locks REALLY well, better than even a professional gunsmithing vice 5 times this things size (and price). What might be most annoying is that this could be an awesome vice if they just made some really basic changes at the manufacturing level. As a pro the magnetic plastic jaws are actually a really awesome addon, usually you get a lame attempt with some rubber caps but these ones are solid soft jaws and they hold onto the jaws well. It works pretty well with some mods but this really needs to go back to the drawing table for a V2. ... show more

  • Decent little vise for the price
The vice is decently made, but like many of the factory products from a certain locale, it lacks finish work and that makes it seem worse than it can be. Take it apart, clean the swarf from the screw mechanism and dovetail assembly, and do a little light file work where mold flash hasn't been properly cleaned. clean it, put it back together with some decent grease. It then works well with very little slop and closes accurately. I found the jaw opening to be sufficient, but the table clamp is only usable with somewhat less than about 1 7/8-inch tops. The swivel is terrible - sit it where you want it, tighten, and leave it there. The soft jaws are ok but have no provision for holding round stock, I cut a few v-groves into the plastic material and it will do. So, a bit of a project (20 minutes maybe), but a pretty good value for light work. I have a much better Wilton of the same jaw size but it's 5 times the cost - and I still had to clean it out to get it to work well. ... show more

  • Good vice for small projects
This can be a useful vice for smaller projects but it can become unstable for larger ones. It's built with ok quality, comes with cushions that magnetically attach to the jaws of the vice, and can clamp to most table tops. I have a comparable craftsman one that uses suction to adhere to surface and I would say that I like the clamp aspect of this one more. I ended up using it on my drill press and it worked very well for this type of work. To highlight the pros: - good clamping ability to work surfaces - cushions are useful to protect work pieces - good jaw expansion for small to medium pieces The main downsides are: - lower quality - not really enough jaw expansion for large pieces and cushions severely degrade that - smaller vice not suitable for large projects Overall I would say if you want a vice for electronic projects or small woodworking projects this is a good option. However If you do larger projects like automotive work and such I would get a more stable large one. ... show more
