Description

The Wilton 78A woodworker's Vise features a metal housing which fully encloses the screw, preventing sawdust and dirt from "gumming" the threads. Not only does this keep the threads clean, but it also increases the life of the vise's rapid-action release mechanism. The front jaw pivots 10 degrees to allow clamping of irregularly-shaped objects, and the entire front jaw can be moved up and locked in place to serve as a full length dog. Jaw width is 4" x 7". Maximum opening is 10". From the Manufacturer This heavy duty woodworking vise has a front jaw that pivots 10-Degree to allow for clamping irregular shaped parts. The front jaw moves up to 9/16-Inch to act as a full length dog. The pivot jaw can be removed for wider clamping requirements. Mounting instructions are included.

  • Good design; poor execution
The media could not be loaded. The removable pivot jaw is nice for grabbing odd-shaped objects and the built-in dog can be raised and lowered as needed. The u-channel keeps dust out of the screw and provides a sturdy sliding mechanism. The first demerit is for the excessive vertical play in the jaw arm. The moveable jaw in its normal position sits about 1/4" below the top of the fixed jaw. You can pull the jaw up by hand to get it in alignment. If you don't do that the jaws are not vertically parallel and form a V shape, which doesn't provide even pressure. You can also pull down on the far end of the u-channel to rock the jaw up and down. (See the video.) The second demerit is for the manufacturer's technical support. He didn't even have one of these vises mounted in his shop so he could see the problem. His only advice was to return it to Amazon and get a new one. Uninstalling and boxing up and mailing a heavy vise is not my idea of a good time and there was no indication a different one would act any differently. The plate that holds the u-channel to the fixed portion of the vise is set too low and this is the cause of the excessive vertical play. The plate is screwed to the housing and I noticed a gap caused by slightly raised corners where the bolts screwed in. I ground off 1/16" from each corner and now there is room to adjust the plate up and down to eliminate the wobble but also keep from pinching the u-channel so tight it doesn't move. The rest of the vise works well but a customer shouldn't have to take a grinder to it to make it work. ... show more

  • Will last lifetimes!
My dad was a high school wood shop teacher and had 16 10" wide Wilton vices on 4 large workbenches for his students to use (& abuse). He bought them in the late 1950's and they lasted his whole 35 yr career, plus another 18-20 years after that! Not until the town built a new high school were they replaced, but I bet someone is still using them to this day LOL! I have the 7" ver. of this wonderful vice, now I wish I bought the 10" and I'm going to order one of them as well. I like this new ver. of the vice as it covers up all the vice's threads, which is great, no more fooling around trying to clean them all the time. This vice is VERY well priced, I can't imagine why they don't sell more of them, they are built like a tank & very reasonable to boot. The big advantage to the Wilton vice over other vices is the nifty quick release function, you just have to turn the handle one turn to the left and the front jaw will pull all the way out. When you're ready for the next item to be put it the jaws, just push the jaws in right up to the object and give the handle a couple of turns and it's tight. No lever to hold down nor turning the handle 40 times....it's a great time saver! The jaws come with 2 blocks of hardwood that have a magnet on them so they are removable (see pic) The jaw closest to you can pivot (see pic) and there is a bench dog as well. The vice is very heavy and will most likely need two guys (or gals) to install, we used long reach channellocks to hold up the vice while marking & then drilling & putting in the lag bolts. We had to make the hole a little bigger with a file to get the recommended lags to fit. This is a tool that you shouldn't skimp on, EVERY wood shop needs a good vice! It's a one time, life time purchase that will last for generations. This is not the place to save a few bucks! • Helping Hands...
The reviews were correct. Quick delivery, excellent product, clear directions, and the installation was straight forward.. No major problems. I did have to remove some of the sand from the bolt holes which can happen sometimes in a forged piece of metal. The 3/8" x 3" lag bolts were a little tight on the front two bolt holes. No big deal, however, from a quality point of view, I was surprised the inspector did not check the bolt holes. I installed a extra 2"x4" underneath my bench so that the lag bolts had plenty of wood to secure the vise. Next, I located and drilled the pilot holes per the directions. The next step, I installed the rear bolts as suggested to the recommended length. Using a round file, I opened the two front bolt holes so that the lags bolts could be started by hand as stated in the directions. Finally, I used my 1/2" impact gun to tighten the lag bolts and started enjoying the extra pair of hands that I need just about everyday when repairing or building different projects for home or the Thea Bowman Center where I work part-time. I found that the magnetic hardwood pads that came with the vise worked well. However, for the next project I needed to install larger hardwood pads on my vise. I included a picture. Thank you for a great product and quick service. ... show more

I bought this to replace a quick disconnect vise I previously purchased from a national woodworking retailer. This vise is much more robust in just about every feature. Mounting was very easy, though the printed template did not match the actual bolt hole pattern of the vise. I also had an issue with 2 of the mounting holes being a smaller diameter then the recommended 3/8" lag bolt. I had to use 5/16" dia bolts. The bigger issue was with the Rapid Nut Assembly. The spring steel holding the pin in the nut was broke when I received the vise. I emailed Wilton for help, but never heard from them. Not needing the vise when it arrived, it sat in the box beyond the time allowed by Amazon to return. Fortunately, I was able to fab a repair (lucky me). It's only been in service for a week, so the verdict is still out on the repair. ... show more
