Description

White Picket Fences follows the adventures of a Mennonite boy, from sheltered origins in eastern Pennsylvania's Anabaptist community, to a career that takes his family around the world. Alternately hilarious and poignant, this engaging self-portrait immerses the reader in pervasive religious tradition, teenage rebellion, and devastating family tragedy. Set against the backdrop of world events, White Picket Fences travels through one hundred years of family history, from the early 1900s to the present day, a story as close to home as the Wright brothers' first flight and as far away as the Vietnam War. White Picket Fences is an earthy, honest and sometimes excruciating account of Christian faith lived in the real world. In the end, one man’s journey and the family legacy that guided him helps us understand why people of faith hold so tenaciously to their values and why everyone yearns for its fruit: the intimacy of family and that place in our hearts we call home. • enjoyable read
D Gehman writes his memoir as he has lived, simply and powerfully. It is hard to imagine a greater contrast than growing up in a culture surrounded by those w/ like faith and passions and choosing to live in foreign fields surrounded by those who held none of his convictions and with none of the safety of ones faith community. I both laughed and cried as the author shared his story as he and his family walked forward in faith undeterred by adversity. His candor was refreshing as he shared both triumphs and failures in their journey. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and felt that his writing style gained strength and clarity as the book progressed. An all around enjoyable read. ... show more

  • Fabulous read!
I know Doug personally; so it was very special to read this book. He is an excellent storyteller and it was difficult to pull away from the book once I got started on it. The most important feature of the book, however, is the fact that he didn’t hide anything that was difficult during his life. He told it truthfully and redemptively - but he was not afraid to lay it all out. ... show more

  • The book is wonderful.
It took me back to my childhood a simpler & more wholesome lifestyle than what we live today. It makes one ask, "How did we move so far from it and why!!?" Doug Gehman is not only a story teller but also quite the historian. I would recommend it to anyone in the Baby Boomer generation & the next generation coming along. ... show more

  • Inspirational and Entertaining
This autobiography of a boy from a sheltered Pennsylvania to travel and ministry in an 'uttermost part' of the world is written in a way that pulls the reader into the life of the author. Douglas writes of his interaction with the people who shaped his life and those that he influenced in a way that draws the reader into the experience with the characters. To describe the book in a few words is difficult but the central theme of God's direction is evidenced repeatedly. ... show more

  • fascinating story
I don't know what I loved more - the boyhood stories, the Mennonite stories, or the missionary stories. This is an excellent book on all three. I laughed continually! I related to all the boyhood and Mennonite stories and admire the missionary stories. Every page was gripping and life giving. Thank you Doug for this open and honest biography! Please print in paperback so that I can hand them out to friends. ... show more

  • An emotional and relaxing story
This is a relaxing read - like sitting in tube floating down a lazy river. At times it feels like your reading a journal or diary - with insights, details and emotions most authors edit out of their biographies. You find yourself getting lost in the pages and at the end feel you've lived a part of the of the life as well. ... show more

  • Knowing the author.
The reason I chose this book because I know the author. I find it fun and interesting to find out what makes people "tick". I didn't know where he came from but I remember hearing his letters read and listening his testimony at church. I always admired his zeal and passion to win people to Christ. I appreciate his honesty and faith. ... show more

  • Excellent!
The book combined his life, Mennonite and Amish lifestyles and history in harmony. It was easy to follow, made us laugh, cry, and think deeply. Doug is a great writer. It is an excellent blend of real life and thought provoking writing.
