Description

During World War II, the small Scottish island of Todday is suffering from the most terrible thing they believe could’ve happened; a wartime shortage of whisky! Fortunately for the islanders, a ship carrying the precious liquid is wrecked on a reef, and it’s up to some enterprising locals to rescue the shipment before British revenue officials confiscate the cargo! Inspired by the S.S. Politician, which sank outside Scotland in 1941, carrying 250,000 bottles of whisky. This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. • Wonderful old style Ealing comedy
Other reviewers have noted most of the salient aspects of the plot of the story. I just want to recommend it to potential buyers for the old fashioned, understated style. Toward that end, I'll note that, to me, the single funniest moment of the film was not the result of a single word of dialog or outlandish bit of physical comedy. It was just a slow camera pan from one previously disagreeable character to an empty glass. They wouldn't make the movie that way today. And it wouldn't be better. ... show more

  • This is a CUTE movie
This is a classic. This is a true event. The Isle of Eriskay, the real isle, is replaced by the fictional Todday (as in Hot Toddy). The people are hampered by "the sabbath" and this movie does a very believable job of conveying that the islanders really did believe. Scenes of them standing and dumbly staring at what they most desire in life is brilliantly juxtaposed with their faith. Then (smiles) the sabbath is over ... their unbridled joy seems so real. FEB stands for F'ing English B@stard and Scottish distain for the English really comes across. The newer version is hampered by their desire to diss the church and all who have faith. Overall, the black and white version is the one you'll enjoy watching. 😉 Only con is that it needs subtitles as an honest-to-God Scottish dialect can be hard to understand. ... show more

  • A Great Movie
I remember seeing this movie when it came out in 1949. It was originally called Whiskey Galore from the book by Compton MacKenzie, but the title was changed to "Tight Little Island" when it was exported to the US. Evidently must have had something to do with the alcohol relationship. It was a sleeper when it came out, and my wife and I saw it at the old Exeter Theatre in Boston, which seemed to exhibit quite a few very funny films from Britain. It is actually a true story about the sinking of a British ship, the SS Politician, which hit a reef during WW II off a Scottish Island in the Hebrides. The ship was carrying 50,000 cases of Scots whiskey. The Islanders on Barra salvaged quite a bit of the whiskey before the ship sank. The movie was a laugh a minute as the islanders tried to prevent the Revenue Service from confiscating the newly-obtained booze to make up for the rationing because of the war. There is still a wonderful pub on the island called the "SS Politician", with all the framed news articles of the event. My wife and I visited the pub a few years back and had a wonderful time. ... show more

  • Good fun
THis was a delight with some excellent actors and a fun story line. All the charactors were believable and as the story is based upon a real event made the movie all the more enjoyable. Excellent entertainment

This is a splendid old black and white classic that took Compton Mackenzie's tale and turned into a movie. Mackenzie's book is a genial story that shows his affection for the islands where he lived for some years and so is rich in detail and meanders enchantingly from character to character. The movie drops a lot of the detail and adds more visual drama, but it does this very well without losing the geniality of Mackenzie's original work. And it is downright funny. The one critical detail that was not dropped is the firm rule that one cannot work on the Sabbath -- and that meant looting a wrecked ship of its cargo of whisky by islanders who were horribly whisky deprived during WWII. For twenty-four hours therefore the islanders watch the ship expecting it to go down any moment. Midnight sees the entire island taking to every available boat to rescue as much whiskey as they can. There is of course a spoiler, and a romance, and (one of the best characters) a terrible old woman. These all blend together to the perfect conclusion. ... show more

This is a classic film with lots of good humor, chock full of characters from a bygone era, and provides a look back on simpler times. I first watched this picture in 1949 as a twelve year old, and never forgot it. Just recently I was able to find the film again. I remembered the title as "Tight Little Island". ... show more
