Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A moving portrait of friendship by Elyce Arons as she reflects on her long relationship with Kate Spade, whom she met in college and with whom she cofounded the multi-billion-dollar fashion company as they came of age in 1990s New York. When Elyce Arons first met Katy Brosnahan in a University of Kansas dorm room, she had no idea that this polo shirt–wearing Missouri girl would not only become her best friend but also change the course of her life. Back then, Katy and Elyce were preoccupied with frat parties and The Mary Tyler Moore Show;within a decade, they’d be scraping by in New York City, working day jobs to spend nights building a new line of handbags that would one day revolutionize the accessories industry. We Might Just Make It After All brings us on the rollercoaster of adventures (and misadventures) that the best friends embarked on, from transferring colleges on a whim, to falling in and out of love with suitors, cramming into roach-infested Hell’s Kitchen apartments, and eventually designing the chic, simple bag that would launch the pair to global fame. Through it all, Katy and Elyce’s friendship remained unshakeable. This powerful friendship lasted nearly forty years, until Katy’s tragic suicide in 2018. We Might Just Make It After All celebrates her legacy as a cultural icon and loyal friend. Set against the glitzy and gritty backdrop of downtown New York at the turn of the century, We Might Just Make It After All lovingly and candidly explores the power of a friendship as close as sisterhood, the challenges facing women entrepreneurs in the 1990s, and the timeless elegance of a generation-defining brand. • Review of We Might Just Make It After All
Format: Kindle
This biography of Katy Spade (Kate Spade) by her best friend, Elyce Arons, is very insightful and touching. Please note that if you are triggered by brief mentions of suicide, do not read this book. However, for the most part, this is a beautifully written chronicle of Katy Spade and Elyce Arons’ friendship from the moment they met in college on the very first day right through to the sale of the Kate Spade business and onward to the Frances Valentine business. It’s amazing how much they accomplished together, even having children together as well. I found the discussion of business from a woman’s point of view fascinating. If you are not interested in that, don’t purchase this book, because it is filled with the history of the Kate Spade business. It is also set in the Midwest but almost immediately after is set in New York City. I loved the NYC setting because I grew up in the area. Personally I was too busy to follow fashion in the nineties though the early two thousands, but really enjoyed reading the ins and outs of it. I am really glad that Kate Spade had a dear friend like Elyce Arons to share her memories, because they are amazing and so worth reading. A beautiful person; a beautiful book. ... show more

I couldn’t put this book down until I finished it! Elyce is a wonderful teller of stories that she and Katy Spade created over the past decades. Secretly made me wish I has been there in NYC with them and their friend ❤️ My new obsession is everything Frances Valentine ❤️❤️❤️

  • Nice biography
Format: Kindle
Very hearty! Such a successful woman, funny, smart, beautiful. Depression and anxiety can be hidden however has an impact on so many lives. I think its important that suicide should not define that person and survivors should do their best not to take it personally.

  • Fantastic read.
Format: Kindle
This book to me was a coming of age story, a love story between friends and families, and an empowering story of female entrepreneurs and friendships that stood the test of time. Absolutely loved it.

  • Great graduation gift to the creatives and artists in your life who aspire to "make it".
Format: Hardcover
Reading this book brought up a lot of emotions- many laughs, but also nostalgia, inspiration, respect, sorrow to name a few. There is something in this book for most everyone to relate to. It captures Elyce's insider story of the young college friends who chased creative dreams and aspirations in NYC, stumbling forward together in an uncertain and competitive fashion world, against the odds. This book is an important oral history to be preserved for present and future generations of creatives and entrepreneurs, showing the serendipity, joy, tensions, and challenges of trying to 'make it". ... show more

  • Lacks depth and emotion….just a nice, superficial read
Format: Kindle
I agree with what “Elizabeth and the Dogs” wrote. This is a nice, light book, but never goes deep into anything. You don’t feel like there was any hardship while creating Kate Spade. You don’t feel any emotion. It’s written like “we did this, we did that, but with no emotional depth or struggle. When you read that Kate Spade committed suicide you are left wondering about her depression and what really happened. Also, they can’t emphasize enough that Katy and Andy were separated, but no talk of divorce or anything so that was not her reason for committing suicide. People get divorced! It would have made the book feel more real if they talked about her depression and what she was going through. Also, Andy helped with writing the book and you can tell. It lacked emotional complexity and that Katy was human like all of us. ... show more

  • Beautiful Memoir
Format: Hardcover
Being from the Midwest, the description of Elyse’s and Katy’s kind, fun, genuine personalities and their work ethics make them both so relatable, making the reader feel as if she knows them personally and making her a cheerleader rooting for their entrepreneurial success! Elyce’s friendliness and conversational storytelling style make this book and their friendship truly memorable and unforgettable. I love that the book is a celebration of their life together showcasing the “light”: the love, laughter, and friendship, from a very “dark” and heartbreaking tragedy. Beautiful read. ... show more

  • Questions Unanswered
Format: Kindle
Very well written but more focused on her friendship with Kate Spade and explains very little about her depression issues or why she took her life. The author states she had been battling depression for several years and was working with professionals but only literally mentions it at the end of the book. We are all still left wondering what happened and apparently there was a note but no mention of it's contents to shed any light on why. ... show more
