I had a plumber refurbish my shower valve in my guestroom bath -- replacing the old 1980s Delta ball valve with a modern Moen cartridge valve. That entailed making a hole in the drywall on the other side of the wall to expose the back of the valve. Rather than immediately hiring someone to patch the drywall, I thought I'd leave it open for a bit to ensure it doesn't eventually start leaking, so I ordered this Watts 14"X 14" Spring Fit Access Panel. The hole is taller vertically than horizontally, but the panel went in perfectly and is much better than guests looking at a hole in the wall. It fits tight, and doesn't rattle, and looks nice enough to allow me to wait until I have painters in the house for some other reason. This solution is a bit pricey for what's effectively a piece of plastic, but I wasn't able to find anything close to the right size locally, and I'll have the panel available when I eventually get my other shower redone. ... show more

This cover is made of matte finish plastic with a rough "eggshell" look. It is called 8"x8" but it's 10"x10" outside dimensions. It is designed to fit into an 8"x8" hole so you end up with one inch of overlap all around. If you wanted to you could fit it into a hole as small as 6" by 5 ¾". So for practical purposes it will cover any hole size from 6"x6" to 8"x9" as long as two sides are parallel. The attachment mechanism is a sliding latch panel that is spring loaded across the back. It does not have ears or screws or any of the other common attachment methods. To install it you compress the sliding panel and insert the other end end into the hole, then release the pressure on the locking panel. Removing it requires sliding it in the proper direction or inserting a thin putty knife ... there are no clues if you're not familiar with the design or don't know which way the installation is oriented in the wall. Probing with a very thin putty knife is probably going to be necessary. That's the price of a clean look. When painted to match the wall color this is a VERY discreet cover. BUT there are drawbacks. The first is noted above, namely that it's hard to figure out how to remove this guy if you didn't install it... there are NO external clues. Secondly, to compress the spring on the back will require a putty knife or sliding the whole panel...... you're probably going to scrape the surrounding paint. Thirdly, the rear locking panel slides in two channels; the panel can bind in these channels defeating the spring. The attached photo shows it binding against a fully-compressed spring in a channel that seems clean. The only solution seems to be to lubricate the channel... but what do you use to lubricate plastic sliding in plastic channels? Vaseline? Oil? Vegetable oil? Water based lubricant? They all have a downside and the dust that's liable to accumulate on the back of this panel is going to mix with lubricants and make a worse mess. I have no good suggestion. So very good-looking flush-fitting panel that will cover a large hole, but kind of a PITA latch. ... show more

Install could not be easier. Depending on the existing hole if there is one, you may decide to enlarge the whole, which is what I did. If you are cutting the hole, the included template makes sizing the hole easy and the cover installs in seconds with no screws. As a handyman, this is my go to when I need an access panel for plumbing. ... show more
