Walnut is easy to cut, shape and sand, and the wood takes on an amazing look with a clear finish. Black walnut, is available in many forms here at Barrington Hardwoods. It is a favorite for furniture, paneling, musical instruments and sculptures. Black walnut is from North American and grown for woodworking, it is a moderately hard wood with a rating of 1010 on the Janka scale.

One of the corners of one of the boards was ever so slightly damaged in a way that makes it apparent that it was either sanded or planed too hard in one corner. Possible that the corner chipped and they sanded it smooth. Either way the corner is damaged. Still usable so no refunded needed or anything but I can't rate it 5 stars after waiting a long time in shipping for a damaged board. Otherwise beautiful wood with no knots. ... show more

I was very pleasantly surprised that these walnut pieces were absolutely perfect. The dimensions were exactly as ordered, and the faces were absolutely flat and parallel. Same with the edges. I could not have milled them better myself. No snipe. No knots. No blemishes. No complaints.

    • Quality commensurate with cost

I'm an amateur woodworker. I wish I could afford to make things entirely out of beautiful hardwoods but walnut, in particular, is expensive. I use a router kit to edge-band (modified tongue and groove) veneered plywood with strips of walnut ranging from less than an inch to a few inches. There is no walnut veneered plywood to my knowledge, but using a walnut edge on maple, oak, polar or birch provides a nice contrast. Using thin strips for edges, you can get a lot of mileage out of a couple of 4 foot boards. Always use a table saw to rip the routed strip from a larger piece, it is dangerous to use a router to tongue or groove thin strips.
