Description

Size:10 Piece This walnut hollow whittlers kit give whittlers, whether beginners or advanced, wood pieces that can be carved into a variety of shapes and sizes. Include wood pieces that are great for carving because they are softer woods with no knots. This light weigh, soft creamy white wood is easy to work and glues into larger block very well. It has no figuring, with a fine straight even grain. Carves well and is excellent for detail work. This product weighs 0.50-pounds. Set includes 10 pieces, 2 each of 7/8-inch by 1-inch by 2-inch and 7/8-inch by 1-inch by 4-inch, and 3 each of 7/8-inch by 1-1/2-inch by 2-inch and 7/8-inch by 1-1/2-inch by 4-inch sizes are approximate.

When you search for basswood, up pops Walnut Hollow offering in what appears to be basswood inmultiple sizes and you think cool, I can get different sizes for my projects. Unfortunately, it is a bait and switch because 1.75 x 1.75 x 5 , 3 pieces is not basswood it is pine. Yes, it clearly states pine whittlers kit but under a basswood search. Further, read the description very closely because it is not 1.75 x 1.75 x 5 but rather 1.75 x 1.75 x 4.3 and 5.2 and 6. Yup, it is all there and yup, I should have read it. Shame on Walnut Hollow for grouping this in with basswood and "misleading" a bunch of carvers selling them pine. Shame on them for labelling the wood length as one thing in the description and something else in order. I bought this twice consider me a fool. That said it was relatively clear pine but harderived to whittle than basswood. ... show more

I purchased this bundle of basswood to see how useful it was. For beginners I'd recommend getting some larger pieces of wood to start on. While these can be used by a carver with some experience, I think they are small for a new carver to work on and have enough size to adjust for mistakes. Hopefully a new carver is aware they should wear safety thumb and finger guards or protective tape on the Carving hand (one holding knife) and a carving glove made with Kevlar or steel threads. Holding a small piece of wood with a glove can feel slick. I've been carving for over 50 years and would say the bundle will better serve more experience carvers. I would be pleased if someone gave me a pack since I do a good bit of small carvings. Netsuke and geometric pieces. ... show more

I'm a beginner and found this easy to shape. Is so soft that it can be handle easily, therefore I'm trying to make this tiny bird and I'm satisfied with the process. Bought this wood to use for Cub Scout projects. We had never carved with wood, so perhaps I'm not expert enough to provide a good review. But this stuff was so impossible to use in carving that the kids were miserable. It was a miracle that they all ended the evening without any cuts. Read the dimensions. These pieces are extremely small. The pieces are basswood, and the bag is labeled as such. They are nice clear pieces, just very, very small. I normally carve small faces/heads, but these are too small for that. Only 3 stars because its not a good value. You can get a little bit bigger pieces for about the same amount or less at Hobby Lobby or Michael's with their everyday 40% off coupon. ... show more

The wood is really easy to carve. It is quite soft, so it makes carving easy with a bunch of different carving tools. It was a great learning pack of wood to start with. I have created a few projects with it that I love.
