Picked these up as our kitchen has a weird little bit of wall between two doorways that is just between too small and too big to do much of anything with. I've been hunting for shelves that might work for it for close to a year now, and usually the issue is I needed some sort of edge or safety bar, because I wanted to use them for spices, and free up my spice cabinet, which is packed so tight I have spices on the counter below it. I ended up with these mainly because the price was right, and I got 10 shelves, which is overkill for my needs, but I figure I'm bound to make a mistake with at least one of them. Their basic style was also appealing, because I had to give up on finding good looking edges/railings on shelves. My plan instead is to use a separate item (bar style cabinet pulls, specifically) to make my own railings. First impression when I got them was that they sent me the wrong item, because the box was so light. I'd seen the reviews mentioning this, but I had no idea that light meant balsa wood light. A bit of research into paulownia wood let me know that no, this isn't made of styrofoam, and after working with the shelves a bit they are remarkably strong for their weight. I've done a few drill holes so far, didn't encounter any splitting or issues (I haven't fully motivated myself for the whole install process just yet). The main thing I'm not looking forward to is that the brackets use 6 screws apiece, and having never installed shelves before, I'm just expecting a lot of issues. The brackets themselves are also lightweight, but they seem strong enough, they didn't have any bend to them when I tried and I think they'll work well for spice shelves. I did notice that these don't appear to all be one solid piece. You can notice color variations and grain differences on one edge of most pieces, it's easier to distinguish when looking at the ends, as you can see in the picture. They do seem well connected, but I'll be putting that end closest to the wall, so the screws should all be on the larger part, and it'll avoid extra stress on these parts. Just a bit disappointed that it's not one solid board. Overall they seem like a decent set of shelves for the cost, if you're looking for something basic and effective, these seem to fit the bill. I'll try to get my act together and get these shelves up, then I can upload some photos and offer an update on just how good/bad the install process was.

So what drew me to choose these was that it came with several for a good price. They do not look like real wood in my opinion. They came individually wrapped and once taking that wrapping off, I couldn’t tell because they were SO shiny! (is that a thing?!!) I wasn’t too concerned though because I planned to cover them. Now, I will say that I should’ve checked how wide they were to see if they would’ve worked with books because that’s where we lost some cool points. Any books (unless MINI) poke out from edges. I decided to keep them because they didn’t look so bad in the big picture. They were easy to install. Hopefully they stand the test of time!
