    • It'll do, it'll do
This isn't like an old, early to mid-20th century model that weighed as if it were cast iron, this is very lightweight; that makes it easier to use, but it is a tradeoff to much lighter steel which reduces its survivability against the more stubborn hard-pack and stoney soils. Until it proves itself against the more challenging soil types - and survives - I have to keep it at a mid-level is sturdiness; I gave it a quick and simple test run in a bed I've kept turned the last 2 years and that was no contest for it. Mainly I was just checking how it feels in the hands - it's pretty obvious it isn't made for breaking undisturbed soil - it's not a plow - or shovel. I have a hard time imagining it easily working its way through sod or grass - one would certainly have to cut that away with a shovel and then go at it, I'm confident it'll grind through most of what may be below it - again, depending on how rocky. I'm pretty sure very much gravel at all will bend the tines - and that would be the death of it if one couldn't straighten or remove any bent ones. Stringy root mass will probably get twisted up in it too. The handle in nice and long fully assembled, has a nice comfortable girth that is much easier on the hands than thinner ones. Being sectional one can shorten it quick and easy if in a tighter spot, or anywhere it may be more useful shortened. It's bit wider than it looks in the pics, and some others I seen/used as well, it doesn't seem to rock/roll side-to-side leaning like a narrow one tends to. As long as the downforce is kept straight in line with the handle it travels fore-and-back at a smooth clip. I could see it getting used in ways not conducive to living to work another day; it isn't hard to imagine how I may have punished as a teen boy - I'm well known for not being gentle on tools, surviving me is a task for most, well - used to be, age & wear have taken toll. That's exactly why I decided to give this a try, overall it'll be of great use to me. ... show more

Our ground is very hard. It did a decent job without watering it to loosen it up. It was easy to put together. Seems sturdy enough but the hoe piece may not last, we shall see. It will be perfect for setting prepping my garden next spring.
