The Jacobs is smaller than it looks, about 1/4" fully opened, so I didn't get to use it for its intended purpose. But it's going to find use, I'm sure, so I'm keeping it. I like the shroud it includes for a disc cutter so you could possibly use it like a tiny table saw. The power brick has selectable voltage which gives you different motor speeds. It's a sturdy enough, good enough hobby helper and I doubt you'll find better value in the price range ... show more

I make inlay rings and this lathe is perfect for that. I can not speak to using it as a wood turning lathe but it is not super powerful so you need to know how to use a lesser powered machine to not destroy it in a half hour like i saw someone else review. I would totally put that on the user just over working the machine. It has multiple speeds but i only need to use the slowest one as it is fast enough for what i'm doing and it works well. Its pretty straight forward and seems to be built strong enough for what it is intended to be used for. If i have to i would buy another because the price and quality is right. ... show more

(I got the 14” x 40” version) Negatives: 1: the tool rest is basically hot garbage. The edge of it is incredibly uneven, and looks like they poured hot metal into a form, but there were bubbles in it. See the picture. That picture was taken after about 20 minutes of use, it is not from wear, it came that way. 2: 1/2 horsepower is a tad weak. I am using razor sharp tools and I have to very slowly wear down the piece I’m working on. It will stall if you try to go too fast, and I find that irritating as (expletives). A full horsepower would have been much better. 3: the tools it comes with are trash. The handles are way too short for control purposes. They come as sharp as a chocolate chip cookie. Be aware that if you don’t have tools already, you will absolutely have to sharpen the ones that come with it before attempting to use them. Positives: 1: price. It is a very cheap tool at point of purchase for a 14”x40” 2: the center pins are good quality, and the adjustable pin has its own bearing and spins freely. A huge plus. 3: the body of the lathe is sturdy and not rickety at all. It should hold up for many years. 4: I thoughts the sliding prop that holds the adjustable pin looked like it would snap under light pressure from the ad photos. It is sturdy and I’m not worried about putting pressure on it. Conclusion: I would have returned this lathe immediately after opening because of the tool rest alone. After turning it on and feeling the weakness of the engine, I would have surely returned it. I do, however, really need a lathe right now and I don’t have the time to return it and get a more powerful one with a better QA process on the tool rest. These folks are obviously making cheaper tools with cheaper processes, hence the tool rest. But they are also asking a fair price for what it is. I’m sure that they probably don’t have all their tool rests bumpy like mine, but that is an *essential* aspect of a lathe. The tool rest *must* be smooth so you can slide back and forth on it smoothly with your tool. It makes a gigantic difference, and I’m irritated about it. The classy thing for Vevor to do would be to send me a new tool rest. For once-in-a-while lathe users, this is a decent option. For professional, regular lathe users this option leaves a lot to be desired. Most people want to hobby use a lathe or use it for one project and then let it collect dust in their garage. If that’s you, this is your lathe. Consider my decades of experience and comments before buying and save yourself some frustration! 3/5 stars for bad quality assurance on the tool rest. I’d give it 5/5 because of the price if the tool rest came in good shape (or if they send me a new one). Happy lathing. ... show more

If you're a weaver and use a hand crank to fill your bobbins and spools, this mini lathe cuts the spooling process by 90%! There are electric bobbin fillers available made for weavers, but I didn't want to spend $300. This inexpensive alternative takes a few tries to get used to fitting the bobbin into the contact points, but once you become familiar with it, your hand crank will only gather dust. ... show more

Completely poor quality machine quality control and design. The panel to secure the back beside the motor where the cord enters the machine has a self driving metal sheet screw that acts like a stripped out nail vibrating back and forth as the top two screws are completely useless. Tried tape but will need to purchase small machine screws and attach nuts to them from the inside motor housing. The tool bar test is extremely poor quality and designed. The bar height at maximum level with the bar resting ON TOP of the set screw is about 1/16 of an inch BELLOW the center of rotation with the headstock spindle. When set with the set screw on the lowest part of the bar or the highest rest position is nearly 3/8” below the center of rotation making it completely useless for anything especially pen blanks or anything with a small diameter. Thirdly the set screw for the tool rest is stripped at the tap. When no bar is in the screw tightens securely. With a bar in place the screw just turns and turns never tightening the bar in place. Trying to use it for the first time it just keeps slipping to the bottom and I have put this bar at a 90 degree with set screw centered on the flat part of the height bar numerous times with the screw just turning never tightening the bar in place. Very disappointing and frustrating experience. I would not recommend this 40 inch 4 speed adjustable by belt lathe to anyone. I will have to spend more to repair this tool rest or rig it to work than I spent on the machine. Cheap price means nothing when it is completely useless every penny spent was a wasted penny. ... show more

Fun little machine, not very powerful it just uses a small 550 motor and has little torque and relies on speed,you will need to come up with something better to hold your work into the collet as the little dremel bit they includes strips wood the second you touch the work with the chisel,i also made a longer chisel rest as the one included is far to small..but for the money if you just want to make a few small items it works great,ive made a few small items for larger projects using it.. ... show more

ive had this lathe almost 2 years so this is a long review and i absolutely love this lil lathe i have turned many things from super hardwood to cork and it always preforms ... about 1 year in i dropped the power supply and broke it and since then ive just been using a 90w 19v non adjustable power supply from my old laptop it.. the turning tools will do on soft stuff but the blades are thin and they bounce introducing a less than desirable finish.. i just bought a a better set of wood chisels just like the ones that came with it .. the solid tool they send thats smaller and thicker is great but dulls fast and needs careful sharpening to be put back in service ... i would buy again and again its perfect for the small trinket makers and the person whos not sure they want to get into wood turning this makes a great cheap way to dip your toes ... i use it to turn corks for old bottles and muzzle plugs for my blackpower rifles along with screw driver handles i bought a long bit set and made my own wooden screw driver set .. buy it you wont be sorry... also as far as mounting i just slap it in my vice and give her a snugging and turn away... ... show more

"Instruction Book" contains nothing but warnings. No where changing the speed (advertised as 7 speeds) is explained, (found the switch on power supply after setting it up totally , no instructions are given on change implements in the drive and tail stock which required tools and a great deal of effort to loosen Allen screws. So much for "reading instructions before operating new machines"!! When I got the lathe assembled and found out how to run it, I mounted a small mandrel that shook the entire tool like crazy. Checking the bolts mounting the motor to the base and f.... found them barely screwed to the base!!! To say this item was a disappointint is an understatement!!! I had such high hopes for it! ... show more
