I've never had owned "cheerleader shorts" before but always wanted a pair. I'm used to baggy, floppy, drawstring athletic shorts, so it took me a few minutes to learn how to wear these and get used to a more fitted feel. I'm pretty straight through the hips (about 41"-43") and thighs, with a flat butt; the XL fit perfectly and true to size as advertised. The legs were a bit tight (maybe "fitted" is the correct term), and I don't even have thick thighs. I'm basically boy-shaped, so for women with actual curves in the right places, maybe go up a size. That's what I plan to do if/when I buy more, but mostly because I'm used to roomy shorts. The white piping along the edges really makes them look peppy and fun.
