I bought 4 of these 48 x 18 five shelf units. I’ll write a thorough review for other buyers because returning these once the box is open would be a hassle, to say the very least. Bottom line is that the shelves are the least expensive of all the various same size units. Other than cost, their main advantage is the smooth, solid surface of the particle board shelves, which make sliding medium weight boxes on and off easy. They appear very easy to assemble in the promotional materials, but in short, assembly is surprisingly time consuming to get right so the units are solid, even if you get what I guess is an improved version including the center connector pieces and plastic feet. My shelves came with neither and ridiculous instructions that didn’t acknowledge existence of either component. After reading reviews here, I had to call the company, who mailed the vital bits later. Apparently nobody at the manufacturer had ever actually assembled one of these units before they started shipping them. If you order, make sure you get those bits in the box and don’t bother trying to assemble the shelves without them unless you are a pathological masochist! The shelves must be placed on a perfectly flat surface or shimmed to be level and even. Should you ever want to move these shelves from one address to another, you’ll probably need to take them completely apart and reassemble at your new location. Otherwise, I’ll bet you’ll have broken particle board, sprung and bent metal corner posts and a large helping of irritation. Here are some important assembly tips: Have a medium to heavy hard rubber mallet for assembly, NOT a soft rubber mallet. If you place the bottom shelf on the very bottom post rungs, you can have the bottom two shelves equidistant from each other (9 open post holes above each shelf). Otherwise, after placing the post connectors, one shelf will have less vertical space than the other, which may or may not be a problem. Use the plastic post end covers on the bottom, not the top, to ease moving the shelves into place and to avoid scraping your floors. Make sure the center connector pieces are all oriented up and down in the same orientation, with the tabs either above or below the opening the tab was cut from. Otherwise, the shelves above will not be quite level. Be patient and take your time in assembly and/or have a punching bag nearby. Last, for about $35 more per unit, Home Depot has chrome wire shelves of the same dimensions that are much better looking, far easier and quicker to assemble, at least as sturdy, have one more shelf, are easier to move around, and have adjustable feet for leveling (and available casters). If I had to do it again, I'd spend the extra money, but these shelves will serve my needs well now that they're assembled, as long as I never have to move... ... show more

The shelves are very good. Wish they would have been a little cheaper. Also, the Post Couplers and Plastic End Caps were missing. Item was sold out and their resolution was to return/refund. I like the shelves overall so I kept them since they were sold out, but I don't think I got the full value of the product. ... show more

Be sure you received the couplers if you are going to stack the shelves. I didn’t receive any in the box. I had to order them from the manufacturer.

I had ordered 2 of these shelving units a couple of years ago and was very satisfied. This new shelf is not up to the same quality as the original ones I ordered. The metal parts are slightly smaller/lighter so it's not quite as sturdy. Also the finish isn't the same quality as the older shelves. This new one has a glossy finish, the older ones have a rough finish that appears to be thicker. Also, the description says it includes plastic end caps, but they weren't supplied. The shelves are OK; I'm curious to see if the new one holds up as well as the older ones. ... show more

There were bolts or connectors for the sides the extent the height. The instructions showed the pins extending past them doubled up. But the pins do not extend enough to go over 2 overlapping uprights. I had to buy additional nuts and bolts to put the second level on

This brand is a cheaper construction. Like other version, each leg comes in two parts. Instead of having connectors to join the two halves, they use the shelf spans, one attached to the top hole and the other attached to the bottom hole, to hold the legs together. So one shelf has to go right in the center, and the connection is fiddly and difficult to get right and the metal can easily get all twisted up. ... show more
